Halloween Flop Review

Thanks so much for giving this game a go, not too mention the video and review for it. We're both really glad you enjoyed the characters, art, and gameplay.

The music is sadly not custom. It all mostly relates to some sense of what the battle is parodying. One of the more blatant examples is the Charlie's Angels theme for the fight against "Peter's Angels."

Some notes from the video:
-The reason Bobby is low on attacks is because of her character personality. Perhaps it isn't the best idea to devalue battle proficiency over character integrity. A hard line to decide between.

-On that line, yeah, Jack in Box is very luck based in a game with set damage otherwise. It does, however, have the highest damage potential of every player skill. Attacking an enemy that is already had full health can take some of the risk out of it.

-The reason it's actually better to have Candle Magic be Magic than Astral is that Astral is not strong against anything. Astrals have a defensive advantage over Undead, not offensive.

-(6:00) The slimes actually have a change to essentially do nothing on their turn that decreases as their hp does. So they should start out easy and get harder as the fight goes on, but I can see RNG was hating on you a bit.

-(7:00) We both agree that we messed up on Magic Plus, heh. I don't know why my mind said the math makes sense and it's worth it. I guess the big numbers fooled me.

-(10:58) 120, that must have been a buffed Candle Magic. I did make sure that there was no enemy skill that could one-shot you, /unless/ it was a weakness hitting move when they have a buff.
Oh, and for Rusty Nail (the skeleton), he never has any punctuation. He's more making sound than actually talking.

-(13:25) Delila actually starts with whatever BP you finished the previous fight with. In hindsight, I might have considered giving her at "if she has less than 30, then she starts with 30."

-(14:09) An in-battle retry option is an interesting idea. Hmm...

-(14:25) We actually had a sprite with Agatha's hat that we completely forgot about! (and lost in a computer transfer).

-(15:16) : ) We actually discussed in February (after ignoring the game for a bit) that the fact Easter and April 1st fell on the same weekend was a clear sign that that was when this game had to release. We then went back to ignoring it until this past week, heh.

The next step for us is to definitely take what we learned with this and apply it to a system with growth. Limiting stats and removing a lot of RNG certainly makes balancing easier.

Once again, thanks a lot.

We're not really done yet

I was originally going to say nice video editing, then I realised it was probably just files on the memory stick. XD

The Featured Game Thread

I was certainly shocked by the "new achievement" notice to say the least.

Super RMN All-Stars

^ Does that technically mean you have two featured games in a row? haha.

But same, congrats to those involved, especially those who took the time to judge and put together the "all-star" list.

Do graphics matter?

Thought is a much better way to describe it, thank you.

Do graphics matter?

Graphics matter in the sense that they can be a good judge of effort. If a game looks like shit, it's probably going to play like shit too. I'm not talking mediocre 'oh, there's nothing special about this map' graphics. I talking about the type of graphics that tell me the creator doesn't love their project. If you can't take the time to make your game look like it wasn't created by a 6-year-old using a computer for the first time, how can I trust that you put time and effort into any other area of the game?

I'm not saying everyone has to make custom graphics and every screenshot should be a masterpiece. Far from it. As long as the graphics look like you put effort into them, they're more than passable.

On the flip side, I'm also not saying pretty graphics make a great game. As someone whose skill set falls firmly in the good graphics, so-so gameplay camp, that would be pretty hypocritical. It just means that's where the creator's talent lie. But that's a different topic.

Halloween Flop

Haha, yeah. We've been pretty quiet. We'll work on a project for a week or two, and then we'll get busy with life and disappear for several months.

All Hallows' Event

There's two options with VX/Ace (and XP too I think?)
Option 1:
-Compress game data and select include RTP (don't encrypt at this point even if you're planning to with the final version)
-Extract that file
-Delete anything you didn't use
-Re-compress however you choose

Option 2:
-Change the RTP line to "RTP=" (minus the quotes)
-Add everything you need

Even though option 2 is technically easier, I usually go with option 1 and I don't know why.

All Hallows' Event

I would think that if a game was so broken or grindy that you cannot finish it, it wouldn't stand a chance of being top three anyway, especially with this many entries. But that is just the opinion of someone who has never had the experience of judging anything. Difficulty is a different issue, however. If I thought the game was a contender, I might ask the creator for a save or something to get me past the problem area.

Isn't it really up to the three judges who wins. or is it more democratic than I expected?
There's a "Voter's choice" award unrelated to the judges.

Also, I obviously didn't finish in time, but good luck to all those who did.
