Tips on Making Good Forests

There was a game I used to play called Neophyte: Spiritmaster. I don't have great tips to make the best forest, but what I try to do is mimic what they did in that game. Because it had the best damn forests in a 2d game that I have ever seen in my life.

A tree canopy overlay from massive trees. Smaller trees and grass, lush bushes, rivers, flowers. Damn gorgeous.

3 tile rule... Whatever the heck that is, need not apply. They key to victory is not something every 3 tiles away, but something different every so often.

So why not take time to make it look different.
Seriously, if this were a fresh project, I'd be all over making custom graphics, but this thing's been in development hell for years.

Well in that case, just finish it, but don't feel the need to. We're hobbyists, right? Yeah, if you want to go custom everything a new project would be the best way to go.

Just got a steam account. :/

Check my other screens, this part of the map purposely looks dead, I generally don't have issues with coloring. LockeZ has it right. But objects do use the same coloring because I've limited myself to a palette of colors. This is why there are no stark changes.

Anyways, I can make do with brightening certain things to make the floor look more noticeable, however.

why are colors so contested? :blank_stare:

I Miss the Sunrise

i miss the sunrise too. :(

Loved the game!

Online RPG is searching for a programmer

Are those mock-ups of the game or actual in-game screenshots?

If I weren't so busy I would help you make it with Sphere. I have knowledge creating online games in it, but I'm just really busy, so can't help. Project looks really neat though, best of luck!

I think it's something I can handle; I'm not a stranger to pixel art, just not spectacularly good like, say, Ocean or Nessiah.

Yeah, right on! That's part of what I wanted to say, you'll never get as good as them if you do not try. It's the least you can do using the RPGMaker. It should invite custom artistry, because its the only other thing it can do!

Sphere didn't have an RTP so I was forced to make my own pixel art, and now the art in Blockman is passable and different than any other game here.

I didn't care if there were spectacular games made with the RTP/rips, It's just that you've got all the time in the world to make a hobby game, and one thing I've learned is that even if you don't complete the game and release it, it's still just a hobby. So why not take time to make it look different.

I didn't like steam because my brother and I would share games. We've been doing this for the past 10 years. When I look at my collection of games (oldies like Baulders gate, or newer ones like Fallout 3) I love taking solace in the fact it's a game I did not illegally download, but I can still to this very day install it on any one of my computers without worry.

Steam on the other hand can manage multiple computers, but its still tied to one damn account. And if the account is in use on one computer you can't play games on another.

Steam is a godsend, a perfect reality for single and lonely PC gamers. I has friends and family who like sharing the games that we buy. Too bad steam can't share the same games across the family members. Too bad that when my brother buys a steam game only he can play it and if were lucky we *could* take turns at one lonely time interval after another.

I know playing like CoD on two computers after buying it once may seem like I got more than my monies worth, but I'm talking about a twin brother. I don't want to multiply my money output just because we like the same games? It had never been this way before. and I know multiplayer changes the experience, but Fallout: NV is a single player game. I liked installing Fallout 3 on my computer and my brothers computer and then for us just playing at whenever time regardless if the time was the same or not. We didn't *have* to worry about steam accounts, but Fallout NV, unless there's a way to disable steam for it, I don't think we'll ever get to play together unless I throw down more money for the convenience.

I don't know about you, but I grew up in a household where I had one disk for a game per family. Not 3 or 4 depending on how many family members like the game. What if I look at my Baulders Gate collection and saw I had 4 boxes of that game? One for a different family member because that's how steam works, right? This is so wrong. I wouldn't mind if steam introduced account sharing for like families and shit.

Oh and steam accounts aren't usually "idle", or at least my brothers. I know that I can use his account whenever he's not using it on any computer, but not if he's already playing/downloading/browsing a game. Which is surprisingly quite often. And so surprisingly we now have games that can't be used while other games are being played/browsed/downloaded by someone else.

Say my brother has games 1-6 and he's using game 3, that means games 1, 2 and 4, 5, 6 can't be used on another computer (by me for example) including game 3. And what if game 4 I really wanted to play, and it was on his account because he also really wanted to play it. I'm not gonna re-purchase the game for myself just to play it while he's doing some other game. Fallout NV again comes to my mind. While I can touch the box-art for the game, I still can't play it even though my brothers playing CoD Black ops.

Contrast, contrast, contrast! Make the crates much closer to white to make them stand out more, and choose unexpected colours for the other objects. Use tints that are opposite on the colour wheel to add contrast to objects that are still grey, just not... monochromatic. Otherwise, I'm always intrigued when I see smashed out computer monitors!

Sure, I'll see what I can do.

How does this relate to Kongregate games?
Relevant because the game was a hit success whilst using something we all know (and use a lot), REFMAP in this case.

Granted the numbers aren't a lot (I've not seen another case of REFMAP usage), but that's not the point.

Don't quote me out of context. To clarify I meant what I said as it pertains to Kongreate. I was just saying how my thoughts may tie into Kongregate games, rather than the ones here. The question wasn't directed to you or anyone.

Anyways, I'm done discussing in this topic. :/ I just want my Christmas back. <heads to rock in ground>
