Looking for CSS and Logo design help.

Just a quick question here. I know that there are people in this community who can rig up really nice CSS pages, and also people that can rig up high quality game logos. I was looking either for the people themselves or someone who can point me towards a designer.

What I'm looking for in specific is some basic CSS work, nothing too fancy, just general recolouring and graphic work. (Like a special background for dev posts and such) Me and my partner are awful at CSS, which is why we can barely get this done ourselves.

For the Logo, I was looking for someone who could design a higher-end cartoonish logo like found on games like Paper Mario, Super Mario World, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie or Donkey Kong 64. I'm willing to pay a moderate amount for the logo design if need be, but obviously I'd rather talk about free/trade offers first.

I would agree with the removing of the download count if you were entirely sure of it being a good idea. I mean, most sites have it open to the public but you're right about it not being very necessary.

I feel like we should keep the subscribers viewable to the public though, and if you were going to open something up to only developers then maybe they could see exactly who is subscribed? (I don't know if you guys have a specific reason for not doing this, but it seems peculiar to me that even the dev can't see that info) I guess I just feel that taking out the subscribers is just stripping the game page down for no real reason, as it's a good benchmark for how popular a project is on the site, and judging by the responses in your last topic that matters to some people.

Also, the like and dislike thing seems like it would get really messy really fast. That would actually just be adding unnecessary clutter to a game page, since how many people subscribe to the game is a good indication of how many people like it already.

I have more time to write stuff now, so I figured I'd go into more detail about the different choices like alterego did:


Description: I'll generally only bother to read the description if the game already interested me with the graphics and presentation.

Game Page Presentation: This hardly matters to me. I like a well designed CSS as much as the next guy, but it's just fluff. It has nothing to do with the game, so you'd be better off focusing on having good screenshots.

Download Amounts: This is like "number of subscribers" in terms of importance. It basically means nothing to me. I'm sure I would appreciate a high download count as a developer, but it makes no impact on my decision to be interested in a game.

Graphics: This is the most important part of a game in terms of presentation and marketing, honestly. If the game doesn't look nice then the bottom line is that most people won't want to play it. When I look for a game on this site I look for stuff with interesting menus, maps, characters, art, and so on. I easily pass by stuff that uses Rudras or rips in general (unless they're used VERY well like in Everlasting Journey and Starless Umbra).

Videos of the project: I'm sure that if I was drawn to the project I'd love to see videos of it before downloading. I've never really noticed this around RMN though, most people don't seem to do it.

Creator: This varies, I guess. It really only comes into play when someone reaches amazing levels of fame or becomes well known for their prowess in game design, like kentona, Craze, & dragonheartman. Also it seems that European creators just kick serious ass at everything.

Comments: Honestly I don't really read main game page comments unless I'm the developer. I go over the ones on images because there's usually less of them, and they're more interesting to read.

Game Score: Higher rated games with lots of reviews stand out to me like they would to anyone, yeah. This is a hard thing to get a good feel about on RMN, since only a few games get a fair number of reviews for a truly honest score. Even then I don't often agree with it, like Forever's End being highly rated. My tastes differ from most people's, I guess.

Reviews: I can't say that I read them. Unless I'm the developer, that is. I don't know, I don't really need to hear an essay about how great/shitty something is when I could play it myself.

Hype: I almost never agree with the hype. Case in point, Forever's End.

Features: This can play a big role in it, I suppose. It works like you'd expect it to, I find certain features interesting and it makes me like the game more.

Usually it's the graphical presentation that draws me to a game. Frankly I probably wouldn't even read the description of a bad looking game unless people in the forums were crapping their pants about how good it was.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

I'm playing Pokemon Heartgold mostly. Me and my friend are having a race and I'm completely toasting him at it (I'm almost at Chuck, he just beat Whitney). Since I can't play HG when he's not around playing SS, I had to start another run of Pokemon Platinum to fill the void.

I also just started what has to be my 20th run of Paper Mario. Gotta get that MFD inspiration, man.

EDIT: As always, I'm also playing League every now and then.

@Brady: I would suggest editing your character sprite, as it really doesn't fit in with that style at all. Also, the edges of the trees are mighty square in comparison to the tops and bottoms.

Other than that it looks good though.

Well, I just got the go ahead on a couple of ideas from matrixmancs, so I'll be working on other stuff for the time being. I certainly need to learn how to properly sprite trees when I make a return to this tile-set though.

@MrCharlesMugford: I don't like those trees. I liked the plain old ones better. =/ ...Well, I have nothing against that leaf-ish texture you're aiming for, but if you could accomplish it with less colors, that'd be great. You're using like twice as many colors in those trees than anything else in your game, and that sticks out like a sore thumb.

I believe in the last blog post on MFD I clarified that we were re-working things now that we backed out of a hasty Release Something Demo. Perhaps I wasn't clear about everything that we were re-working though. The graphics for the other areas in the game will have a similar level of detail to them once I get around to fixing everything up.

Now, being that this particular tile-set is still in the works, I probably will remove a few shades from each of the trees. I still have to figure it out, really, as I'm thinking that because of the complex mapping involved World 2 will probably be one of the last ones designed. There's plenty of room for experimentation in that time period. I'll be keeping the array of colours though, I've already decided that it will look that way.
