Please post here oldbies. I am very tired and I cannot see very well...
Games were the same way back in the old days. You're only remembering that there were good ones because they're the only ones to have stood the test of time, but there were plenty of really bad games being made back in then as well.
Not much has changed, just different people making different games nowadays.

I didn't mean my criticism to sound too harsh. I really like the style, I want this to work for you.
The biggest most crucial thing I think you should work on is getting the size of the maps much smaller, or if not, creating more interesting environments to explore. The cave dungeon was horridly boring. I can appreciate minimalism, but making me trek through huge, long chasms of nothingness with monsters every few steps (the same monsters, mind you) is not a choice of style, it's just boring. Even the minimalistic games of old had intuitive dungeon design, yeah?
Increasing the run speed is recommended as well, in my opinion.
If you'd like any help, I'd be willing to offer my input.

Eden Legacy: A Knight of Eden
I did give it a chance. I went in with an open mind and low expectations. You didn't exceed those expectations, I'm sorry.
I looked in about five or six of the houses in the second town, and only saw that everyone of the people inside had been killed (i did find potions in one of them, though). There was nothing there to lead me to believe that the town was anything more than that.
I can appreciate minimalism, but honestly dude, boring is boring. Even games like FF1 had diversity in their dungeons and landscape. I still play dragon quest, FF1, and even the old gameboy FF Legends games; however, for what you're trying to emulate, you're emulating all the worst aspects.
For the record, I played it by clicking the .exe file that came with it.

Eden Legacy: A Knight of Eden
I played through the first dungeon, the town got destroyed, and i went to the next town, which was also already destroyed. Then I went into a cave and was immediately killed by Arachnids.
No music at all was heard... thought my computer was the problem, until I heard the game over music.
All the skills do the exact same amount of damage.
No monster portraits and poor use of RM2k battle script makes battles really uninteresting.
Story is weak and uninteresting. Dialogue is bad.
Maps are way too big and boring (no details or interesting environment to explore), walk speed way too slow, encounter rate way too high.
Lack of diversity in fights. Fighting two slimes over and over again is not fun, it's annoying. And no, running into three slimes instead does not make it any more intuitive.
As it stands, your game is not very good :(. Sorry. You may want to think about completely reworking it from ground up, or just starting over.
