Introducing the main cast of Fear & Hunger! Also info on planned release schedule...

@kumada, Yes, that's pretty much the strategy I was thinking about. But I really don't know yet. I might just leave it as a free game and put up some Patreon or something... meh, it's too early to think such things. The game hardly has enough visibility for stuff like that anyway. I've just noticed now that this is not just a school project anymore, I'm struggling to find time for the project. I've just been too busy with work and stuff. :/ normal life problems lol

That idea about pools is an interesting one. I really need to think about that! One idea I had was that gods could help you out in coin tosses if you had a good relationship to them. God alignments could work like pools I suppose. You could do favors like sacrifices and love making to honor them, or pray the correct god against correct statue to fill up the pools. But I also like your idea how skills could be tied to pools too ... hm..

Fear and Hunger

@Kodek, The teachings of gods (or Ancient book I pressume?) is a reoccuring item because you can learn different spells from it each time. I might make more bookshelves and chests with important items, so you can actually get some advantages in the dungeon, but most likely I'll still keep them randomized. There are going to be merchants of sorts, similar to the cat person in the demo, so maybe you can get some specific valuables from them?

You've found interesting bugs. I didn't realize that running away from enemies causes this many bugs. I definitely need to check those out! The sanity or more precisely the fear & hunger system is going to be upgraded, it wasn't functioning well in the demo - so you can expect change in it for sure! Thank you for all the feedback kodek! I'm glad the overall experience was still positive with all the frustrations :)

@Dragnfly
, Interesting insights.. I'm probably going to change the loot and searching a bit, because there are going to be more items in general and more valuable items. I realize it can get tedious just searching through everything, so I might specify the loot to certain objects. Like Barrel might just hold food for example. This way you don't need to go through all the barrels, unless you need food items especially. Maybe some level specific items too because so many seem to expect finding certain items in certain levels. It's at least a motivation to search like you said.

I like the idea of searching attracting trouble. In the original pen n paper version of this game, often unlucky search could lead into trouble or misfortune. I'm still going to keep the randomized factor there, because I feel like it can create some cool moments in different playthroughs. I will however manipulate the system more, so some items will have better chances in certain situations.

Haha, I'm glad the intro was addressed. The girl I have no idea how I'd handle, though. I hear this game is a thesis of some sort? I'm interested how it's presented in an academic setting.

The girl thingy just doesn't end to a sudden game over now. It just says she is not willing.... <_< ... >_>"

The game was only a part of my thesis work, practical part to be more precise. (the thesis is divided between practical and theoretical works) I study graphic design - so I was looking into horror aesthetics and thematics, especially in video games. I threw in few dead baby jokes and pictures of the rape scene and called it a day.

nah, I'm actually pretty proud with all the theory I was able to come up with and learn from different books, etc. It's done now and I got fairly good feedback from it. I haven't gotten the grades yet for it though.

Fear and Hunger Review

Thank you for the review! Really appreciate it! I can totally understand the criticism here and many of the things mentioned here will be addressed. Few are already tweaked in the latest version of the teaser demo (like skippable intro, run command and making love with the girl for example)

Fear and Hunger

oh my what a cruel world D: there is always one definite key around in the same exact place on every run btw ;)

Is this a one man project?

Yea so far it is. I've made the game, graphics and music too(except the tune that plays with the logo)

A friend of mine actually just started helping out with the graphics a couple of days ago, so maybe the team will grow bigger. I'm not very good at making music, so I might consider getting someone to compose - although it's been fun making music, so dunno..

Do you mean the guy where it says "you see something moving" or whatever when you approach? If so, he's always been there when I play so I didn't even know he could randomly not show up.

RNG is a big jerk.

Yup that one! He's there on most of my playthroughs too - I never feel like fighting him. But it's 50/50 chance, so yea it can happen...

What's RNG? :O

The walking ghoul's a random enemy in the first area? I've never encountered it once, and I do thorough sweeps of each area before proceeding with a run. That's really weird.

With the steal skill, I've never been able to successfully use it without getting killed in combat, but I was figuring it would generate different items than Search. I was wondering if this is how those other rooms in the prison are supposed to be accessed.

There's 50/50 chance for the ghoul to be there. It is pretty surprising you haven't ran into it yet. If it was there, you couldn't miss it.

There are some different items when stealing and searching - true. You can get the prison keys by stealing from one of those guards in that area. Although prison cells have nothing useful yet...

More feedback:
-Intro skip now skips everything at once with one button press. Not sure if intended.
Yeah it's intended, the problem is that the logo intro is a movie, so I couldn't find a simple way to stop it from playing if the player wants to skip it - so I made the button skip the whole thing.

-Wandering around with your legs off is boring, which is basically the worst thing for player engagement. Losing your legs works fine when you get sodomized in the jail cell, because you get killed by gnomes shortly thereafter. But waking up in the flesh hole is (while thematically cool) tremendously annoying once you wiggle your way free. There's nothing to threaten you outside. You have to either slow-crawl your way down a floor to find a gnome to kill you, or just hit 'return to title', at which point it would have been better to code a game over. I'm not sure how to recommend fixing this, since limb loss is a big part of the gameplay/attrition-horror, but that crawl is so ponderous and there's no recovering from it. Maybe having a lizardman spawn when you crawl out could help.
True! This is a problem. I was thinking of maybe making crawling faster...

-A Hunger meter off of the menu screen would be really welcome. Being able to track Mind/Fear is great, and it's pretty frustrating not knowing how hungry I am except for when the game arbitrarily tells me. I end up bolting down a dozen eggs and being like "well...did that work? How nourishing is a cabbage, anyway?"
I'm gonna work out some kind of status menu, because it would be nice to see other status ailments too.

-Found a copy of the Ancient Book after using a copy of the Ancient Book. Is there any benefit to using multiple?
Yep. There are 2 magics you can learn in the demo.

-Is the bunny orgy a full heal? I went in with full health, so I'm not strictly sure. Also, is the bit about the 'first one being free' a reference to you not having to flip a coin the first time you go?
It's a full heal (but doesn't restore limbs or other status ailments), it kinda makes things easy potentially, but after the first one it's going to be risky.

-I am still not sure where to find the non-crawling ghoul. Have other people found him? Is he in the demo? I think I can see a standing body in the room to the left of the guards' sodomy chamber, but that room is locked and does not accept small keys.
It's a random enemy in the first area. I seem to run into it almost every turn - but that's random odds for ya I guess. It's sometimes right next to the door leading to the first outside area.

-Gnomes do not leave corpses. Intended?
It's intended. But I'm gonna fix that. Also I don't really like their movements at the moment. So I gotta tweak them for sure.

author=kumada
-Both bloodstains in the guards' room in the dungeons are for some reason impassable objects.
Oh yeah! I forgot that one!

author=kumada
-Guards still use tackle when missing legs. This feels unlikely.
Good point!

author=kumada
-Steal skill cannot be used on corpses. Corpses seem like the optimal target for theft.
You mean dead corpses? You can always search dead corpses...?

Thanks for the feedback again kumada! ^.^

Super Dungeon Master Ace: The Classic Fantasy Adventure RPG

author=- all 14 levels of the original 1987 classic dungeon-crawler

Oh this makes sense! I was just thinking how this game looks like a classic PC rpg from god-knows-back-when! Really awesome. I actually love the feel that era games had.
