IROG'S PROFILE

Hi all !

I like 16-bits RPGs (especially action RPGs) where you feel the quest behind the lines of code. I also like strategy, puzzle solving, immersive stories, tabletop RPG and LARP.

I'm a hobbyist C programmer who likes to work on custom game mechanics. My very first project was a very basic map generator for Genesia, aka Ultimate Domain https://rpgmaker.net/users/Irog/locker/UltimateDomainWorld.zip

I also want to help developers polishing their projects with my player feedback. So I'll be happy to test your game !

See you around,
Irog

The Legend of Zelda (Solarus Edition) Review

I remember it too! But from ZeldaClassic.

The Legend of Zelda (Solarus Edition) Review

No one plays Link to the Past any more.
I do!

In 2D Zelda, the only way to get the content of a pot is to lift it. Then you hold the pot above your head and the natural action to do is throw it. The location of the pots will make you throw some at the enemy. As they cause more damages than your first sword, you'll feel good about throwing them. Moreover, they serve as range attack before you get the bow. And when you have the bow, you'll be happy to throw them and save your arrows.

OoT introduced Zelda to 3D and change things a lot. Have you ever throw a pot in OoT and hit an enemy with it? Very hard to accomplish, right. So lifting the pot was satisfying because you reveal its content. But the throwing was frustrating because 3D made it so difficult to hit an enemy. The designers brilliantly cut out the frustrating part by giving the player an easy way to get the pot content in a single fast action: swing your sword instead of pickup-then-throw. They also added that very satisfying sounds Kylaila loves so much. All players who discovered the series in 3D probably prefer to smash pots than throw them even when playing a 2D Zelda.

I will forever miss the sound of pottery breaking.
OoT was the first Zelda game where you could break pottery. It was also the first time you played kid Link. He was probably the right height to swing his sword at pot height.

If you miss the sound of pottery breaking so much, you can watch this video in loop:

Too much exploration makes you a sloppy fighter

Indeed, in RPGs you could grind to level 99 before facing the first boss. In item/exploration based system, each element that raises the player power becomes reachable only when he/she already own some other items. This makes it easier for the developer to know how powerful the player will be when facing a boss. And design the boss accordingly.

That red spell is also my favorite. It's the equivalent of Doom chaingun. The purple one deals 2 damages is also nice. You can think of it as the shotgun with no damage reduction at long rage. Unlike the Doom guy, you're a wizard so you don't need to swap between guns. Just have your 2 favorite spells ready; cast 3 reds then a purple and you've send 5 damages to the 5 HP skeleton.

If you cast the ice spell on water, it freezes. So you can create paths to reach all enemies.

When an enemy stands behind a pile of wood, use your fire spell to destroy his cover.

The Legend of Zelda (Solarus Edition) Review

I'm facing some issues with Lya and look at how LTTP addressed them. So I'm a bit in a Zelda mood at the moment.

I payed your game three times, using each save slot. So I didn't test the "erase save file" functionality.

On the first screenshot of this review, you have a wall-pillar a few tiles south from the caked wall. When you walk next to the wall it pushes you a bit away from the wall. Such wall-pillar could prevent bypassing the lava pit in bug07. If it works, wall-pillar would also benefit the pits in the ice dungeon.

Here are some modified executable where the skeletons are weaker. Could you tel which one best fits the easy, normal and hard difficulty for you?

Wizard apprentice Lya Review

You probably noticed that skeletons are static. This is because it was easier to have them reuse Lya's shooting mechanics than building AI and path-finding required to develop moving enemies. Yes, enemies that the player should encounter first are not the easiest to develop. But I'm working on it and melee enemies are coming.

Did you manage to defeat all 24 skeletons so Lya congratulates you?

Does the camera move too fast or too slowly?

Wizard apprentice Lya Review

Thank you for your informative review!

Using arrows to move as default was chosen to work decently on as many keyboard layouts as possible, including non-QWERTY. It's always good to hear that the configurable keys made it possible for you to have the most comfortable control scheme on your keyboard.

Indeed, difficulty is high as collectables are not implemented yet.
Do you take cover behind trees and rocks when skeletons shoot at you?
What do you think about the screen moving towards the point you aim at?
Do you mouse near the screen edge when you shoot?
