IROG'S PROFILE

Hi all !

I like 16-bits RPGs (especially action RPGs) where you feel the quest behind the lines of code. I also like strategy, puzzle solving, immersive stories, tabletop RPG and LARP.

I'm a hobbyist C programmer who likes to work on custom game mechanics. My very first project was a very basic map generator for Genesia, aka Ultimate Domain https://rpgmaker.net/users/Irog/locker/UltimateDomainWorld.zip

I also want to help developers polishing their projects with my player feedback. So I'll be happy to test your game !

See you around,
Irog

Isn't this caption a quote from General Patton?

Your game looks promising, I've just downloaded it.

Your game concept picked my curiosity. <Subscribed>

Best of luck for your project.

'Game Length' Specific

This is a great idea, especially if the approximate playtime can serve as search filter.

As a developer, I severely underestimate playtime for my games. So I think players input is the way to go.

To make the playtime as accurate as possible, I recommend computing the median value and not the average value because the latter is more influenced by speed-runs and full-completions.

Do you have a favorite game that you made and like to play from time to time?

Do unfinished games qualify?

From time to time I play Wizard apprentice Lya tech demo to have fun taking down all skeletons on the test map and see if I can get the "You are a dodging master!" message for not taking a single hit.

I also start MinST to face a good strategy challenge. The game has a build-in map editor so I create a map and play it. I like to push the difficulty and often end-up building and playing unbeatable maps.

Free Action Game Musician!

Great tracks! I also like SNES style music. If you want, you could help me on an action game: Wizard apprentice Lya. It's an adventure top-down shooter. It is still early in development so I prefer to request music tracks when there will be enough game content. The game will need tracks that convey a sens of adventure and action. I like retro style and use midi tracks for the game.

First and foremost, a review is written for the benefit of the audience and not the creator. Thinking that the criticism within a review isn't valid because it isn't sympathetic towards the creator is remarkably silly.

The audience of RMN reviews is composed of both the players and the developer(s). So they should address the needs of both. To identify those needs we have to answer two questions:
1) What are you interested in reviews of your own game?
2) What are you interested in reviews of other developers' game?

For me:
1) I look for player feedback to identify the weak/strong parts of my games. I like to read detail explanations as why my game failed to create an engaging experience for the player. Anything that helps to improve my game is worth reading.
2) I look at the game average score and usually read the conclusion of a review in the middle of the list (to avoid overenthusiastic and overpessimistic conclusions). I don't spend a lot of time reading the reviews because I prefer to spend that time trying the game myself.

Reviews outside hobbyist communities have a totally different audience: customers! So they answer the question: Is this product (game) worth buying?

I mean I'm just saying don't be a dick about it because you're presumably gonna be interacting with the recipient of your review. Like you can warn players away from a bad game without savaging it.

You can, I can't, which is why I don't do reviews anymore :V
You are aware of how to write good reviews so you're fully qualified to write them.

The game page is here: MinST

If you see cut hexagons on the edge of the map, you can scroll further. There is probably some danger coming from beyond!

Gammake goes slowly due to a lot of code rework. But now the foundations are stable to build new AI features.

Is there Something Wrong with me? Am I just not a good dev?

Is there something wrong with me?

NO

Am I just not a good dev?

This question is irrelevant. If you find joy while building your game and/or feel accomplished when your computer finally runs your game as you like, keep doing it! Skill level and enjoyment are two separated things: if you are the best dev but don't enjoy making games, I would recommend you to stop and find a hobby you like.

Analyze the negative criticism: is it pure anger to attract viewers or is there something to learn from it.

Let's have a look at the second comment to kory_toombs as example:

"Action puzzles with a timer in a turn-based game. Nope.
Delete folder? Yes, I'm sure."

The player didn't like action puzzles under time pressure to the point he/she dropped the game. The timers might be too short. Maybe an Easy Mode that gives more time to the player would help. What about a Story Mode with timers removed?

"Ah... started out so good... Whelp, moving on."

The game intro and beginning are really good!

But sometimes, the comment is pure rage and anger. So you should discard it and focus on the things that makes you happy.
