April was a Fool Review

First off! Thank you for the review! I really enjoyed reading it :)

I'm curious which part of Kent's expressions you found limited? We made the expressions as needed, rather than having a set ahead of time to plunk in, so there wasn't any limitations on that. Though, I'm willing to bet it may have something to do with the fact that Kent's face doesn't always reflect his words. (which was quite often done on purpose with him) I really gotta get on finishing those backgrounds. Eventually they'll be the same quality as the ones in the CGs.

I'm really glad you enjoyed May so much as a character! As I've said countless times before, she was the biggest challenge for the writing for me. Our five heroes were all natural and practically wrote themselves, but finding the right balance of "character" and "blank-slate" to pull of someone who was both interesting, but not impossible to relate to was quite a struggle at first! I'm glad that struggle has paid off though!

I like that you point out the hand-holding as well ;)

Gunn is so popular! If I'm being honest, I didn't know what people were going to think of Gunn! That that worry has been proven a waste, because you all love Gunn!, and that pleases me :> Because he really does rock haha

Thanks again for the review!!

My good friend, a teacher, Mamono. It's her birthday today!! :D

(she's not involved with the game making community)

Her editor notes were precious. (especially during the bad ends)

April was a Fool Review

Thank you for the review!

As you said, with VNs it's the writing and the characters that can make or break it above all else. (well, there's some VNs with horrible RNG that make them almost unplayable without save scumming, but that's not applicable here) Because of that, I'll admit I was very nervous putting this game out - It's a heavy concentrated dose of me. Racheal performs fine assists towards plot and characters, but that's largely my department. It's my sense of humour and my love for dramatic cruelty and to hear this be well received by others (especially someone who is well outside what would be considered the target audience for this style game!) makes me sigh heavy with relief and then have a party in my head. Everyone is invited to this party if you can find a way in my head.

I'm especially happy to hear you enjoyed May as a character! I've never written a silent protagonist before, especially not one who is supposed to be a bit of a blank-slate so they are relatable to a wide variety of people. That made May the single most difficult character to write. (but I think "What is wrong with you people?" is a pretty good reaction that anyone could have if they met these people because, seriously guys, what is wrong with all of you?)

The music is not custom, but we frustratingly spent a lot of time trying to find things that we thought fit the mood and style of the game. I'm glad that that paid off! (The music when you face the Dragon is my favourite; it never fails to get me jamming along with it.)

Thank you for praising the art so much! I had a lot of fun bringing the characters of this project to life. Their emotions are all very exaggerated! Thanks for enjoying them :> The backgrounds were a sad product of running out of time. I tried to make sure the sketeches looked convincing enough on the first go since I had a feeling they wouldn't be done in time for release. Eventually I hope to polish them up to the same level as the backgrounds in the CGs

Thank you again for taking the time to both play the game and write up this review!

April was a Fool Review

Thanks for the review~ I'm still really glad you enjoyed the game and our lovable cast of fools. :)

@Addit: A lot of time the HP didn't get to change because the line said "they got hurt, but Gunn healed them." But yes, we rolled through the whole game and deducted HP and MP as time goes on. It's mostly just cosmetic, or for a laugh, or to depressingly remind you that yes, right now 1/2 your party is a zero HP. (or negative HP as the case may be in a couple of situations)

@Craze: I look forward to hearing a review that overanalyzes May! That sounds unique compared to things we have read overall.
Kent's bad ending is truly a piece of art... Fought back tears writing one part of that.

@Indrah: So THAT'S what all that noise has been lately. Just Indrah screaming from the rooftops about her undying love for my penmanship. ;D

If we had decided to add RPG elements, we wouldn't have been able to make the game in the alloted time frame. A huge part of making this game was that "We need to FINISH something!" feeling, so we very much set out to make the goal of finishing by April 1st possible.

I wouldn't consider adding it to a future version though - I like how this is. The simple gameplay I think makes it easier to focus on the characters themselves? It's a Visual Novel and that's what I want it to be.

That aside, I've fallen deeply, madly in love with this format of storytelling. The more I think about it; the more I love it. I'm rolling a few ideas in my head that integrate the VN storytelling style with gameplay. (Like 999 or Dangan Ronpa or Phoenix Wright. Something like if you take Castle Chase and smash it into AwaF's face and then put them in a blender together? haha)

Oh, Craze, let me gift you with the full sized version:

Thank you to everyone new who has played~ I'm glad you're enjoying the game! (looking forward to those reviews)

I told myself I was going to plan something for when we hit 2000 downloads, but we hit that number faster than I could think! <3 <3 Thank you again to everyone!

April was a Fool

Thank you to you both!

Also @Reverie I drew this just for you:

Castle Chase 2

As it says, it's on hiatus.

I don't know when we plan to come back to it, but it's definitely something I want to come back to. (there was enough of the story planned and resources built that it wouldn't be too hard to finish)

Unfortunately, I'd want to replace the artwork we had done so far (which wasn't too much, but most of Monica's art was done) because it's from a time period where my art style was shifting and it's hard to look at without shedding a few tears.

(sorting out some of the convoluted storypaths was a headache at the time we were first working on this too; it might be easier now that my skills as a storyteller improved)

Also, I got some very hurtful messages about the fact this game wasn't done a few years back that turned me off of the idea of working on it because thinking of the project reminded me of those. I've recovered from that stigma at least. (Note to everyone, never do that too creators. okay.)

So in short - it's on hiatus, I haven't touched it in years - But it is something that I -WANT- to finish, I'm just not sure when.

April was a Fool

No problem! Thanks for playing~ I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

@Ilan14
If you have all the CGs then yeah, you unlocked the secret ending. The secret ending is the Evil end. (so the corresponding CG is the one on the same page as the holy king kiss CG)
The key to unlocking it is to have an affection of 30 or less with the character whose route you are on, minus Gunn. (This ending cannot be triggered on Gunn's route, because Evil doesn't show up on his route.) Chances are you triggered this on Blake's route, so thought it was a part of Blake's bad ending. (this is what happened to Indrah while I was watching her stream.) because the break between Good/Bad end is before the break between the Evil end, whereas for Erwin, Gabby, and Kent the Evil end check is before the Good/Bad split.

If that's the case, you missed some conversation at the end of Blake's true bad ending, but still unlocked the CG.

I hope that all makes sense. :)
