Why RPGmaker? Why?
author=Ocean link=topic=1896.msg30818#msg30818 date=1221106487This is true to a certain extent. The problem is when a newcomer comes to try the game out, they're confused. They're probably asking themselves "Why did he/she add this here? Should I watch it or skip what could be an essential part of the plot? What if it's too long to hold my interest?"
I would argue that the "Do you want to skip the introduction" is kinda like pressing Start or something to skip a cutscene in a game. I'd rather have that option there. Also, people tend to generally release multiple versions of their game, so I don't want to see the intro yet again. If the game is short and replayable, I also don't want to see the intro again.
If I have not seen the intro, then I will see it. I've had someone tell me they skipped the intro and cutscenes in my game so they could try out the game itself. I don't mind them doing that. They went back in later and played with the intro/cutscenes.
What you said is correct, but usually in commercial games you can pause the cutscene mid-way through and continue on with the game. It isn't the case with RM games. It's acceptable when someone releases multiple versions of their game, but it would be better to just have a save point at the end of the last demo so you could continue where you left off.
Why RPGmaker? Why?
author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1896.msg30703#msg30703 date=1221074484Thank you.
I'm the guy behind the Play Something day if you're all wondering, and yes, you will see more of them.Firstly, what do you want to see more of specifically in RPGmaker games? (I know there is a thread for this somewhere on the site)
Different inspirations for their games, and more games actually getting done.Secondly, what makes you decide which games to download? Reviews? Screens? Videos?
If it looks fun.And lastly, what will make you stop playing an RPGmaker game?
If it isn't fun.
Fun is a very vague statement, but that's all that really matters to me. There isn't one thing that makes me play a game. It has to be a complete package, focusing on just one thing like the story, or just making the game look pretty isn't enough. When deciding what games to download, I look at everything. Everyone knows quality when they see it, so that's really it.
Also, you need to hook me within the first five minutes. And please don't add that "DO YOU WANT TO SKIP THE INTRODUCTION?!?" to your game. Chances are, you added that because it was too long in the first place. And skipping an introduction to a game is like skipping the first chapter of a book. I can pretty much assume how an RM game is going to be just by looking at this option. Just don't do it.

I hate scrolling so much, could you guys hide your images if you're posting 20 of them?
Anyway, I think the tint is a little too strong in some of your screens, maia. Everything looks good though.
Your images look good too, Max. I like the sound of that mirror image move.
And yeah, find better tiles for the grass and desert, Chaos.

What are you upset or worried about?

author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=1887.msg30668#msg30668 date=1221057974She was a shit girlfriend then. No offense. =D
In my similar experience being handsome and charming (we should start a club) I've never had trouble netting pretty girls despite growing up relatively poor. However, I did go to an upscale high school filled with rich kids who got ass simply because of the car they drove and their last names and shit.
It's also funny because the absolute best looking girlfriend I've ever had left me for a wealthy, but otherwise awkward guy, and from there bounced on to increasingly wealthy but otherwise pretty unremarkable guys. Currently, she's getting banged by some (rich) thirty year old that's heir to some company.
Any girl who goes after guys like that is shit, and not worth your time. I hope you don't still talk to her!
The best way to get a girl is through communication, not wealth.
YDS and brandon are correct.
Why (God Why) so many medieval fantasy games and so little of anything else?
author=Max McGee link=topic=1866.msg30556#msg30556 date=1220997072It's true, most of the games are either RTP, or have some sort of custom thing going for them. They don't get caught up in graphics like the us and the German communities do, at least not as much from what I've seen. They tend to focus on more unique aspects(a custom battle system, among other things) in a game.
I'd love to see these games just so our community could have these resources to work with. Assuming they're public domain/rips, of course, I don't want to jack someone's custom stuff.
I'll see if I can find some games that you can check out, though.

I'd just like to point out that there are actually a great deal of sci-fi RM games out there, they just aren't in English. The Japanese communities actually have tons of games that are sci-fi, or something else different than medieval fantasy. They are pretty big communities that have what you want, the problem is it's in another language.

author=RoseSkye link=topic=1866.msg30436#msg30436 date=1220971288Dude, he didn't say story doesn't matter. He said execution, I suggest you take a look at his post again.
Roseskye's post
As for your "pond" thing, well of course. A "lazy" game creator isn't going to make a good game, it's as simple as that. However.....
*Original Story GamesEverything is cliche, I don't care about your story in your game. It's cliche. Cliche also does not mean unoriginal and sub-par.
*Commercial Games
*Games that push the envelope/limits of Rpg Maker
*5 minute games that explore the boundries of RM'er
*Games that are made with the sole purpose of improving abilities.
However, the things you listed do make for a GOOD game. It doesn't matter if it's a jRPG, Sci-fi game, or any other genre. Those things you just listed classify as execution. If the game carries those characteristics, it's good. Period.
Nobody is attacking you, by the way. Take the time to read the posts though, instead of assuming things.
