How important is original 'unique' music in an indie game?

1.
Well, the fact that it's hard to get either someone to compose for the game, or for the person to compose for their own game means that I can't solely download games based on them having an original soundtrack. Then again, I rarely download RM games anyway.

Yes, playing a game with original music can make it more enjoyable, but that depends on the composers skills. I don't really like generic RPG music, and I don't like overused music or ones that just plain suck. RTP music is probably the worst, to me it basically just says "I didn't feel like looking for music so I'll just use these ones that probably everyone else has used somepoint in their game making time". Even for games using RTP chipsets, I want them to have a different soundtrack.

Then again, most of the people here (I include myself) are amateur composers, so I can't really expect another Hiroki Kikuta or Yasunori Mitsuda quality soundtrack, plus we generally don't have the resources to make the sound quality realistic or whatever.

I've composed the soundtrack for most of my projects. I'd say if someone has the ability to compose, they should do so for their own project to make it interesting

2.
Songwriters usually not given enough credit, in my opinion. Since most people only post screenshots and not music, you can't really tell what the music is like until you play the game. Also, I don't think many people even appreciate the music, as you'll see a lot of projects with really mismatched music that doesn't fit the scene. So I think people would go "Ooh, original!" more over the fact that it is original than over how the music actually is. I don't even recall many people putting music in a review, or if they do, it's never in depth like graphics, story, or gameplay are.

Realm of Mana

Yeah, stories, characters, battle system info, that kind of stuff. You should post a battle screen as well. This is called Realm of Mana, how does it relate to the other Mana games?

And you are...? (THE INTRODUCTION THREAD)

I am a 23 year old University student in New York. I've only got a little bit left until I graduate. I originally was studying Computer Science, but then changed it to Music, because I wasn't really fond of programming and I have composed songs for my RPG Maker projects. However, the music wasn't focused on technology, and also I hate performing. I used to play the Piano and the Violin. So then I switched over to Art, which is what I'm finishing my degree in. Unfortunately that means that it's kinda hard for me to fully focus on improving one thing, as I work with multiple media and stuff.

My hobbies include working with RPG Maker, thinking up Game designs, drawing, pixel art, composing. As for composing, my favorite VG composers are Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger/Cross), Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana), Masashi Hamauzu/Junya Nakano (Final Fantasy X). For non-VG music, I go for Smooth Jazz.

My favorite types of games are RPGs, though sometimes I'll play other types. Mario Kart 64 is a fun one, as is Mario 64, Katamari, and some others. My favorite RPGs are Oblivion, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy X, Seiken Densetsu 3, & Chrono Trigger.

I'm an introvert offline, online I'm more outgoing.

Well, I've never really been much for consistency before. Especially back then when I didn't know how to do pixel art. Glad you like the looks of this one. It's not really going to be a straight remake, but some parts of Island Sky will stay, otherwise I'm going to do a lot of fixing up and stuff.

MMORPGs

Well, it was pretty addicting until recently. I'm thinking of trying Ragnarok Online next.

MMORPGs

The only MMORPG I've played is FlyFF. I'm too cheap/poor to pay for an MMORPG, so I only play free ones.

That being said, it was fine until you get to later levels. Then I had more fun finding/buying nice items and selling them than I had levelling up. I'm on Level 42, I'm fighting enemies 11 levels higher than me, which could take out half my HP in 2 hits or less, and I only get .7 EXP for each. Out of 100, so I have to fight 142 of them to Level up ONCE. And supposedly that's good compared to later levels when you'll get only .06 EXP per enemy, or 1667 enemies just to Level up ONCE. Talk about unrewarding. The pace at which you level up is fine from Level 1 - 5. Afterwards, you'll just stay fighting the same enemies over and over and over and over again. Quests? Consists of you getting a ton of dropped items from enemies that are now weaker than you and rarely drop stuff. Fun.

Deleting a game?

Hmm... I tried to delete my game's download so I can replace it with one that had some bugs fixed. Seems I can't, though, I tried pressing the button to delete it in both Firefox and Internet Explorer and it doesn't work. Does this not currently work?

It's Sword of Mana water, it's not really shaded. It is along the auto-tiles in SwOM, which I couldn't replicate because of the 16x16 tile restrictions in the auto-tiles. Besides, it's temporary.

That's what makes it funny!

A screen of an Island Sky remake that I intend to make in the future after I finish my current project. The Sword of Mana tiles are temporary, I haven't made the chipsets yet.

Either one is fine. Use the shadow one if you want.
