Keep it down Pizza! The backers shouldn't know that! D: In all seriousness though, it is common along kickstarters to use easily/cheap implemented features to entice more donations.
It's also immoral, and disgusting.

Apparently it costs 2000$ to add a character class? That's fucking hilarious. Most of the games around here are worth tens of thousands of dollars if that's the case. Also, Synthesis isn't 2250$, it's a freeware script.

If you're looking to practice pixel art then I don't know if I'd recommend starting off with bigger things like monsters. At least, that's not how I did it. I made tiles, then character sets, and only now have I started making monsters. When I did I started with something easy, like this:
This is just the circle tool in paint pretty much. I got it into the shape I wanted, then cleaned it up, applied the colour and finished up all the lines. Alterego's method of tracing a hand drawn image also works, that's what I did for this portrait, for example:
Drawing the pixels by hand in a rough shape is a valid way to do it, so long as you take the time to clean it up later. It's just like sketching a picture.

I think what worries me the most is that me and my teammate are going to have to make a business online eventually. I don't like the implications behind making using the internet so dangerous and let's be honest, scary, with companies and government goons breathing down your neck all the time. Part of me thinks that this shit could be really prone to spiraling out of control if they even get a small foothold with it.
