SCALYTANK'S PROFILE

Greetings!

I'm Scalytank, a game developer from Hungary. I'm highly skilled procrastinator. I also try and work on some projects in libgdx when I find my inner strength for them :D I also like rpg and tactical games... (I may create one, in the distant future... or not...)

I don't want to sound bad, or something, but I belive that games made with RMXP are extremely easy to "hack". I have seen various tools online for this job, however I never tested them myself. I belive that this is going to give you some problems, since your game is commercial, but I assume that you know this, so I leave this topic alone.

Besides this, I am not sure why you choose RMXP as your engine. The built in scripts do nothing for you to make a sidescroller (and making a tile based one is extremely stupid), not to mention, that you want open world exploration. (this means real time "chunk" loading? or just a lot of connected maps?)
I belive that you need to rewrite a LOT of things in ruby, if not nearly all of the scripts. Or you can use some workarounds with default scripts, but that will just run dog slow.

You would be better off with a more performant engine (sphere, ika, or even game maker) and writing your own scripts from scratch (which you would do anyways in XP). You will save a lot of hair pulling, time you spend on code optimization, and your playerbase will be MUCH more pleased. Also, these alternatives are free (except for game maker).

Source: I did an ABS in rpg maker XP, and then ported to ika. I got 20x more framerate. (by the way, I was experienced in ruby, but knew little about python. The problem lies in the rendering technique that XP uses. They used some kind of junk-software renderer. In turn, ika, and sphere uses openGL, and game maker directx, so the difference in performance is tremendous).

Now this is only my opinion. I don't want to force you to abandon your choice, but keep these in mind.

Best regards!

Eclipse Saga

You should switch your download link, this one looks broken (actually it says disabled).

Make a non-linear western rpg shooter starring a black-colored pikachu with sunglasses, a trenchcoat and twin 8mm pistols, who can target the individual body parts of enemy pokemon using Lightning Time to slow down combat and aim

You must make this game. Seriously.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

I just finished an eventing interface for the ika editor, and got rid a whole lot of bugs, mainly in the database interface, and added +3 layers (total of 6) to the mapping interface... It is just complete now ^^.
Meanwhile I just write a game interpreter in python itself (which translates event commands to python). A few days, and I may start working on my game (yay :D)... (The editor, and interpreter are in development for more than a year and half now...)

Currently I am thinking about releasing the editor + interpreter as a utility to the ika engine.

I just go play some games on this site... I need to relax a bit ^^

World of Bob - Christmas Hide and Seek

It's actually "our" (Zsuzsy's) own webpage. NeverBeen. Sadly, it's only available in hungarian. Don't worry, there is no virus inside any of the files:)

Your Star V.3

I must try this game, looks interesting!

Hellllooooo Everyone!

Welcome Serinaty!

Valcarta I: Rise of the Demon

Well. This is a commercial game, but the demo is free... So you can try it. :)

Okay, I tried the game, and I don't want to sound offensive, but... I clearly can't see why on earth would you (or anybody) charge money for this game.... I must be honest:

The mapping is generally bad. Maps look boring, too big, and uninteresting. You should practice, and improve a lot before you submit a commercial game. And you tagged the game as Action RPG. Where the hell is the action? In random encounters?
Also, I have seen this in-game menu, in like, five, or six games at least.
So sum it up:
* No custom art (or VERY little)
* No custom programming (or very little)
* Bad mapping (some are even copy pasted....)
* Medicore story
* Annoying sound when displaying messages

You need to improve this game a LOT. Otherwise, I doubt that you will make any money out of it...

Is this kind of game possible?

I would suggest you to learn a scripting language, and either use Sphere, ika, or Game Maker (you can find those engines here )

Maybe try with a simple game, like a sidescroller, or something like that, for practice.

Edit: If you can live without the isometric part, you can actually use the newer maker softwares easily (if you can afford them)

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Umm... you never heard anything about a program called... gimp? (or paint?)
You can actually create tilesets. And you can add events as doodads to your map...

(under create, I mean paste together :))
