STORMCROW'S PROFILE

>look StormCrow

You see not a bird but an American lady who likes other ladies. Oscillates between shy as a mouse and babbling violently, seemingly at random.

I like badasses. I like babes. I like badass babes the best. Okay...actually I like doggoes the very best, but I aspire to make games about badass babes is my point.

I use music from bands and artists in the free games I make: the frustrated filmmaker in me is very enamored of scoring scenes with rock'n'roll soundtracks Scorcese or Tarantino style. In addition to being a time honored tradition in cinema, this has a history in AAA videoogames as well (for a really great use of it, see Bioshock: Infinite). If I was a millionaire, I'd totally license these songs so I could actually use them legally.

So I'd named my game "Under A Killing Moon" after a song by a band. Googling that phrase today I learned it's already the name of a 1994 Tex Murphy adventure game? Little late in the process for this but I need a new title.

What are you thinking about right now?

What's like...the upper limit, the most naps it's acceptable to take in one day before you need to a) be seriously concerned about your health and/or b) upbraid yourself for your utter failure to be a productive or even CONSCIOUS human person. Got up today at 9:30 AM, took a nap from idk 11-something/noon until 1:15PM then went out to get groceries and now I find my head sagging & eyelids drooping again and am about to reluctantly concede a second nap to my body.

But a third nap? To me even on a Sunday that's out of the question. If I were to take a third nap I'd either be making a doctor's appointment I can't afford to make sure that all of my brain is still there and/or self-flagellating (not in the sexy way) over my uselessness.

(As I might have mentioned elsewhere I'm trying to forcibly adjust myself back into a diurnal schedule, where like, I'm awake when the sun is out and stuff, like how humans are supposed to work? I think it was a week ago tomorrow that I woke up at 4:30 in the afternoon with the sun already setting and ever since then I've been trying to crack down on getting myself up before noon and hence...taking lots of naps.)

A Veritable Retirement Speech

So first off, you do what you have to do for your physical and mental wellbeing, happiness, and sanity. And everyone above who said that the sense of community that comes with hanging out on this website is not actually contingent on your use of an out-of-date Japanese dev tool, they are right. Come back when you feel you can come back: we'll be here.

For the last few years, I tricked myself into thinking that I was transgender. I clung to any and all reasons to believe it about myself. Anything to escape who I was, because I wanted the person I truly was to die and be forgotten. I wish I could say I had a clue that I was lying to myself out of self-hatred, but I didn't. I adhered to far-left beliefs on social media and they circulated this delusion about myself over and over again.

I don't want to soapbox too much on your going away thread, especially if I'm not saying something reassuring (I too suffer from clinical depression) but something you said really spoke to some of my concerns about the culture of the Western Left today:

Culture, Society, & Gender Stuff
Being transgender is...at the moment...kind of a fad. Far-left and even left social spaces will always celebrate someone coming out as trans and will virtually never concern themselves with if that person is indeed trans or if coming out as trans serves them best.

This is a culture/society thing. I'm speaking specifically about the US. I'm also speaking generally about the Western world and developed Western liberal Democracies. Right now, a racist, rapist, shitty-orange-clone-of-Hitler turncoat traitor crook (tell us how you REALLY feel, StormCrow) is in the White House and so we have a society where racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, and hatred have been normalized. It is my considered opinion as a queer anarchist that our culture has veered far, far to the left, actually overcompensating for where our society is at. This creates a cultural bubble where, for instance, being transgender is always 100% celebrated and 0% questioned or analyzed. I don't think that this serves trans people or people figuring out if they may be trans very well.

I don't care who uses what bathroom as long as they're just you know, using the bathroom and not doing anything creepy. I don't care who's allowed to be part of the feminism club. Plenty of people who identify as trans are indeed trans and when they are coming out need support and encouragement. All I am saying is the zealotry--because Atiya, you hit on the exact right word--of the left does not necessarily best serve people that are questioning their gender, it best serves the radical left. Again, in my considered opinion as a queer anarchist (translation: when I say things about "the left" or "the radical left", I am saying them from inside that group). You're blaming yourself for trying to find some kind of meaning in life from identifying as trans: I want you to know that to a certain degree, that non-solution (for you, at least) was pushed on you, if not by individual friends then by the general cultural milieu which is...pretty crazy right now.

For many years I've also tried to buy happiness. Some folks fall to the bottom of a bottle, but I fell to the bottom of an art commission list. I can't tell you how much buyer's regret I've experienced when I came up with a vague idea, commissioned someone for assets without ever considering their use or even prototyping a game, only to immediately regret the decision.

For what it's worth, while you can't buy happiness, you can definitely buy being incrementally less sad. Having burned through six figures of USD (yes really) in two years of bad decisions predicated on this broken logic, I find myself laden with regret for the precise inverse of the reasons you describe. I am now too poor to commission anything for my games and I hate myself super hard for not setting aside money for that specific purpose because it was my number one priority...but now my sole priorities are trying to keep a roof over my head and feeding my furbabies.

This year has been one of the most formative ones I've had throughout my whole life. I've come into myself and accepted who I am more and more, making more progress at self-improvement and self-acceptance than I had in years. In the end, I'm a more devoted artist or writer than a game dev.

RPG Maker hasn't given me that satisfaction and peace and drive. It's why every couple months of little to no output or effort made, I have breakdowns. I'm just not built for this. It's just not my passion, and I'd rather refine and challenge skills I know I have than torment myself for ones I don't.

To reiterate what probably ten other people have already said, you don't actually need to make RPG Maker games to hang out here. You're welcome any time.

Another thought: if you are still at all passionate about or even interested in video games in general, you should know that across 90% of the industry, people that work in games do ONE thing like writing or drawing, as opposed to TRYING TO MAKE AN ENTIRE GAME THEMSELVES which is a pretty damn crazy way for us to go about it. What I'm getting at is, if you like writing and drawing, and you don't like any of the other BS that goes with game design, you can still be involved with games (if you want to) doing only those things you actually enjoy.

Love yourself. That's an order. Take care.

I would just go with "Underneath a Killing Moon" or "Under This Killing Moon" honestly.

If you want to get fancy, pick another line from the song's lyrics. I don't know enough about your game to know which lines actually embody what the game is about though. But without any context, "Tongue Held Tight" or "The Blood on our Black Gloves" is a killer title.

Was NOT expecting LockeZ to be a Thrice fan (more likely he just googled up the lyrics but the thought amuses me). That said:

spoilertagged screenshot for being huge

(Don't worry, most items have a more informative description, not one that's just "flavor text", but in this case I couldn't resist.)

Incidentally, the game (probably overdue for a game page) is about witches & witch hunts. The literal kind of witch hunt, not like, McCarthyism or the HUAC. "Spanish Inquisition comes to Central-Eastern Europe (sociopolitical basis for the fantasy world, but not the geographic one, comes from ~15th-17th century Czechoslovakia, Romania, et al., the capital of the game world is essentially Prague) + oh yeah magic is real + Lovecraft" is a decent elevator pitch (minus that nerdy parenthetical bit).

The new title is Malleus Maleficarum. NOT AFTER THE AFI SONG. The AFI song is a coincidence (not that I don't like early AFI, actually I really do but..."When You Were Young" was named after a Killers song, about three of my most recent/or current non-RM projects have their names taken from songs, the other title I was considering for this which will almost certainly wind up as an episode title or subtitle, La Curandera, is the title of a Clutch song--clearly this is apparently my thing but I can't let it be the thing I do all the damn time to the point of caricature).

Anyway, it's named after the same thing the AFI song is, the 15th Century manual on witch hunting. One English translation is "Hammer of the Witches" (German: Hexenhammer) which is pretty badass.

Personally, that name is so badass that unless you're planning to sell the game or want to be able to google it easier, you may want to still keep the name XD Even tho I completely understand the urge to want to change it

First off, THANK YOU. I thought it was badass too. <3

Secondly, I am planning on selling it commercially as it happens.

IMO if it's a 25 year old game you can keep it and just make sure to emphasize RPG or something.

*nod*

Like I just told my pal Uzuki from RMW, I doubt there's a law--at least not one anyone's going to bother enforcing--keeping me from calling my game the exact same thing. It's just that apparently, this Tex Murphy game is actually like, really famous and well known (just not, obviously, to me/us) as an exemplary specimen of adventure game from that era, and in the event my game to any degree gets noticed, at all, I don't want games journalism broadly speaking to have to refer to it as " "Under A Killing Moon" (not the Tex Murphy one)".

(Having not bothered to wikipedia anything, I think that the Tex Murphy games were made by the same person as the Gabriel Knight games that came out roughly around the time and IIRC that person was one of the very first women in the vidyagames industry in a position to actually exercise creative control and respected for it.)

Also I can totally imagine a universe where the RPG thing backfires so emphasizing that this is Under A Killing Moon The RPG leads to fans of the adventure game (if any are still alive jesus FUCK that game is almost older than me) thinking that it is...an RPG version of the 1994 adventure game lol.

I'm pretty happy with my new title but I'm not spilling it here, it feels too built up now lol.

The Pale City

Gotta say, I've never been the biggest fan of the Pioneer Valley resources (in spite of having used them myself) and whatever desaturation filter/screen tone you've got going on is not helping. At a glance, your mapping could also use some work.

There are probably a hundred free games I'd play before I'd think seriously about paying money for this one, and there is no amount of good the demo could be that would change my mind, so I'll skip it for now, no offense, nothing personal. The setting and story here are intriguing to me, but the legion of good free games on this site is a very hard bar for commercial games to overcome, at least for prospective customers as dirt poor as me.

Is Kyle Muntz you? If not, congratulations to you both, him for his publication history, you for having your game written and designed by someone that actually shows up on wikipedia when you google them. If so, congratulations on your publication history, very impressive for 29, speaking as someone who actually knows.

It was the "and designed" that caused me to think that you were referring to yourself in the third person: as a rule, people with promising careers as novelists don't branch out into designing some other guy's RPG Maker game.

SC Monster Pack - RMN edition! (Free Monsters)

This is really cool. I wish I weren't I'm the brokest I've ever been in my entire adult life.

This does look great though and I do wish you the best of luck.

GRS wha tis that avatar from? It's groovy.

Secret Santa 2019 (Sign-up)

Alright, I'll sign up. Let me redeem myself for last year.

A reminder that some people who defaulted last year and the year before will not be allowed to take part. Storm, since you defaulted last year, this is your last chance - if you default this year you'll be banned from future events, so make sure that you meet the goals on time, okay?

I'm gonna give it 110% to get my giftee a giftworthy gift but just for the sake of clarity you uh...you do mean future secret santa events, right? Not like ALL FUTURE EVENTS ON RMN IN PERPETUITY? Because if it's the latter I can't afford to take the risk however slight of my effing up again so I'm out.

Weird Stealing on RMW

This is indeed...yeah, weird is the operative word. Unlike the demihuman filth monsters actually profiting off of some of our games, I really don't know what this guy was thinking, as he obviously couldn't have thought he'd get away with it even for 24 hours, and yeah, again, any ad revenue he siphoned with the end run through his blog was going to be minimal even if this wasn't caught and shut down immediately which it looks like it was.

In cases like this I do find myself sometimes wondering "was this just a realllllly confused fan?".

Flurry of Owls - 2019 Gammak Challenge!

- The game must feature an owl prominently.

Just how prominently is prominently enough?

I started a game specifically for this event way back when you announced it, the protagonist was an owl, it was very clearly owl centric, but I abandoned it shortly thereafter (probably because I got really involved in one of my non-RM projects).

One of the four or five main characters in my current game (which it's optimistic to think I'll finish before the year's over but w/e) is an owl (or chooses to appear as an owl, more precisely) but doesn't show up until 30 minutes-to-an-hour in. Is that prominent enough? He's a very major character, just not the MAIN character.
