Doubt it's the same, but I run RPG Maker VX Ace games on my Macbook all the time.

The window with "Racers run atuomatically blablabla" doesn't last long enough for a player to be able to read it all. That's my only note for now.

That is just in the video, not in the game.

I'm pretty sure that's something he added for the video. I don't think its going to be present in the game. You'll probably get your instructions from Ester, the Chocobo Manager... probably. *cough*

Precisely.

Still really early. I did most of this in about two hours. Gonna be taking time with it tomorrow.

If it plays like Final Fantasy VII chocobo racing then I'm on the lost position. I never understood Final Fantasy VII's chocobo racing mechanics. Final Fantasy XIII-2's were more appealing to me; possibly because they were simplified.

The goal is to first correctly emulate the FF7 races, and then add my own twist to it afterwards.

FF7 had this weird thing where you pressed X a bunch of times to make your Chocobo (Boco, duh) run faster, I replaced that with boosting already (short burst of speed).

Your chocobo's Speed level determines how fast it runs by default. Stamina will drain slowly during the race. When it reaches zero, your chocobo will start losing Speed. Feeding your chocobo at the Chocobo Farm raises his Speed and Boost levels.

So there's the mechanics behind it, when you're actually racing you'll run faster by holding Up, that will drain Stamina. Pressing A uses a Boost, which doesn't drain any Stamina but you can't use a Boost if your Stamina is already at zero. Pressing nothing makes the Chocobo run at his default Speed and regenerate Stamina.

The other racers are randomly chosen (some are fast, some are slow, some are REALLY slow). Typically, rival racers should be considered more of a challenge if they're NOT riding a standard yellow chocobo.

Is it one of those minigames where you don't do anything at all?

Not at all.
