Goaling It 2024

It's that time, another year is beginning and It's a great opportunity to set goals. So, go ahead and write down what you would like to achieve this year. You can follow my example or come up with your own way. You can focus solely on your gammak goals or your personals ones. I tend to combine them both, trying to be realistic.

The previous year brought some big changes to my life and my goals for this year reflect that. My overall goals might be more vague than ever. That's for multiple reasons. I'm trying to keep their number low, I'm trying to keep them achievable and things might change again. I will try to elaborate on my goals and what I have on my mind, tho. The most important goals are in bold letters and secondary ones are in italics.

My goals:
1. Finish Soma Union and write a review
2. Get in shape and climb more
3. Travel abroad
4. Start dating again

5. Gammak

The first goal is one I have from the previous year. I really want to finish that game and write it again. It's one of the more memorable RM games, there's a lot to take from its design and I guess it should be an easy goal to achieve.
The second is closely related to the second half of 2023. I was super committed to my job and I dismissed my physical health. I want to work on that. I usually feel better, have more energy and more self-esteem when actively doing a physical activity and right now I feel tired and sick all the time.
I'll almost certainly travel abroad this year. So, accomplishing the goal should be easy. I plan 3 or 4 journeys. The first one should be to Italy in February. In March I should spend two weekends abroad. One in Leipzig and one in Croatia. The last trip I plan is either to Indonesia or Africa. That one is the actual real goal here, but I wouldn't feel too bad if I failed it.
Next on, my personal life got sacrificed in last four months and I feel lonely sometimes. It's time to slap myself and instead of doing nothing start being active in seeking out romance.
And yes, the final goal is gammak. I want to talk about this a little bit more in detail. I haven't touched RM or any other proper engine in years and all my skills are forgotten, but rn I have time I can commit to this and I have projects I want to finish. The first one might be a short bitsy games, just to get something finished fast. After that It's time to finish Left Behind 2 and Burnt Ones. The first one shouldn't take too much time, but I want it to be a deeper, more polished experience than the original. Burnt Ones are a spicier project. I like the world I created for it and the backbone of its story. Other than that I'm starting from a scratch, I might even use a different game engine.
The last thing I would want to work on is a small metroidvania game, but I don't have any concrete plans for that one. Maybe I will fit in a jam game as well.

Btw, if you're looking for inspiration for your goals, you can search through previous threads:

Advance Wars Mafia (Game Over - Mafia Wins) [MAFIA]

Wars World is in turmoil. Nations of Red Star, Blue Moon, Yellow Comet and Green Earth barely managed to end their bloody squabble, when a new, and this time common, enemy invaded their lands. Armies of Black Hole are swiftly approaching populated areas and threaten lives of civilians and more importantly sovereignty of the four warlike nations.
Red Star mustered its armies and moved them in a general direction of invading tanks. This evening its leadership met up one more time to discuss the campaign and its upcoming first battle. What can they deploy? Should they hide soldiers in a forest? All commanding officers have their own opinions.
In the middle of their discussion Nell, Red Star's Commander in-Chief walks into the room.
She informs them that they have moles in their ranks, ready to leak their cunning plans. Without rooting them out, Red Star has no chance to succeed. A new round of discussion, one full of accusations has just started.

Pasted basic rules:
In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.
At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.
The game has two phases, the first of which is Day. During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it becomes Night.
During the Night, the thread is locked and no one can talk publicly. The Mafia, however, can speak to each other privately to plot strategy and decide who to murder before the next Day begins. In this way, they can silence members of the Town who are threats to them. At the end of the Night, the murder is carried out and another Day begins. In effect, the Town gets to kill someone, and then the Mafia gets to kill someone.
The game alternates between Day and Night until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else (or nothing can prevent the same).

Important game specific rules:
>You can claim your power and your flavour. There are anti-claim mechanics in play.
>Do not post contents of your private message in the thread, this would get you modkilled
>the setup is closed, vanilla++
>Red Star wins if they manage to kill all players aligned with Black Hole
>Black Hole aims to reach parity
>Players have to hammer in order for the lynch to proceed (I'm willing to change this).
>The thread's closed at night.
>Do not edit your comments.

Voting:
Use #Vote Name to vote for a player's elimination.

Setup:
Closed setup for 9 or more players with multiple basic power roles.

Day/Night:
72/24 hours on D1 and 48/24 hours from D2 on.

Start:
4/5

Example PM:
You were assigned a tank. It has a glorious red paint to match all units of the Red Star. Your mission is to neutralize the forces of the dreaded Black Hole. You aim by casting your vote, the only ammunition you posses in this conflict.

Players:
1. Gourd_Clae
2. psy_wombats
3. Fomar0153 Sami, Red Nova, Tracker
4. OzzyTheOne

Goaling It 2023

It's slightly bit late, the new lunar year, the year of the rabbit, has started a week ago, but not too late to spice it up with some properly juicy, overambitious and quickly abandoned resolutions. We all have 11 months to left to fulfill them and it clearly is easier to stop smoking in February than in January.

Last year, I think we skipped this thread. And it was a worse year for that. All of us can recall Misaos and lack of epic grandiose adventures (I guess epic and grandiose have similar meanings). Our health got worse and our kids meaner. Some of us even got addicted to anime (not me fortunately, I'm happy with smokos). So, we should renew this ancient tradition and set up some goals. They can be connected to gammak, rmn or to life in general.

I think I have many things I would like to accomplish this year. I finally managed to finish my degree earlier in January and I'm going to be 30 after all. But I also prefer to keep my lists short. 4 or 5 items are ideal. I don't think I have any gammak related goals. In my current situation, they would be naive at best. I don't have many rmn or games or media related goals tbh. I just want to stay some time without a computer, but that's not really a resolution. Here it is (important resolutions are bolded and secondary goals are in italics):

1. Travel to Vietnam for my friend's birthday party
2. Find a proper job
3. Rent a flat or a room with normal living standards
4. Finish and review Soma Union
5. Climb a route rated 7 or more

The first one is dependent on me finding the job soon enough and saving up enough money.
That's why the second goal is the most important and it directly connects to the third. After binge writing my thesis, my living conditions ain't the best. I don't have a lot of privacy, I don't have my own room and I'm moving between two cities very frequently. I don't need a well-paid job, but I need a regular income close to a single place, where I can have my stuff, sleep, cook and have some privacy.
My only gaming goal is humble for a reason.
The last one is sport related. I think this is a good year for getting better at climbing and more importantly working on my physical condition. The goal is to climb up a route a semi-decent rock climbing person can finish no sweat.

2023 Gaming Diary

You probably know the drill.

2023 is here and that means time for another thread, where we can keep track of our gaming, share thoughts on games and recommend them to others. In the past gaming diaries served primary as a space for me to boast about various indie games and as a source for my end of the year summaries at pixel render. Now, with my activity getting lower and lower, I'm mostly interested in games You've been playing.
I encourage you to share your thoughts on games and possibly even come up with recommendations for Misaos. Later on, I might even come up with calls for playing new RMN releases.

This edition of gaming diary sticks with Marrend's 2021 model. The main posts links to "master" posts or lists of all participants. They might be summaries of activity or bucket lists of games you would like to get around to in 2023.

2022 Gaming Diary

A new year is already in progress and I need a place to keep a track of games I've been playing. Also, I want to boast about some hidden gems. If you have a similar urge or want to write about games you enjoy right now, this is the place. It's also a great spot to share possible Misao nominees. Commenting on content of other participants is encouraged!

I decided to follow Marrend's 2021 model. The main post will link to everyone's 'master' posts, if they make one. These might be list of games played, bucket lists or something else you wish to spotlight.

Games that "need" a film adaptation

So, I watched Prince of Persia the other day and it got me wondering, which games big and small would work well as live action films and which actually are at least slightly likely to happen eventually. I feel like even many popular games are either too niche (Metroid never was a massive hit) or derivative in their story or overall feel (Metroid basically is Alien, but I also think the adaptation could go more Martian/Gravity/The Other M than traditional space horror and actually become a hidden gem.
I would like to see another take on Prince, but that's likely not gonna happen. The franchise is dead, Ass Creed succeeded it, literally starting its development as a Prince of Persia: Assassins.
That said Ubisoft games probably are the most likely to get an adaptation. There is a Far Cry film and Assassin's Creed. Both of them are shitty and I probably won't ever bother to watch (me not being interested in Franchises is a factor too). Their other popular franchises like Rainbow Six and Watch Dogs have a good chance of seeing the silver screen, but I don't find them very interesting (I like Hacker films but Dogs lack cool esthetic imho). I would love to see a Might and Magic film, but the franchise is dead and I doubt we will see a new game anytime soon, so talking about film adaptation is waste of time. Still, it could be cool even trying to adapt it's world full of mythical creatures into something consistent. Dark Messiah would be a decent base imho.

Mafia Championship 2021 - invitation

Hey,
It's that time of the year again! Mafia Universe is hosting the 8th season of their annual Mafia Championship and Ara (from MU) got in touch with me to share this with you:

INVITATION TO THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP (SEASON 8)

Ahoy there! :)

I’m very excited to invite your community to participate in Season 8 of the Mafia Championship.

The Mafia Championship is an annual forum-based tournament series that pits representatives from various online Mafia (aka Werewolf) communities against one another as they compete to determine the Internet’s greatest forum Mafia player. Each participating community democratically elects one person to represent them and be their “Champion”.

The tournament first started back in 2013. Since then, 320+ different communities and 50+ different nationalities have been represented.

It’s a super fun event that has created many new friendships and close bonds between communities. I hope that you would be interested in taking part :)

DO YOU ACCEPT THE INVITATION?

If your community wishes to participate, please confirm your participation to Lissa as soon as you can to ensure yourselves a spot. Currently, the plan is to accommodate 150 communities this season. If there is further interest, additional communities may sign up as substitutes; generally there are some replacements needed both before and during games.

If your community agrees to participate, the deadline for selecting your representative is May 7th, but the sooner the better.

The games will take place on Mafia Universe. If it’s okay, I can link directly to the general discussion thread regarding this topic on Mafia Universe.

Important notes

You may decide yourselves how you want to elect your representative, but we highly recommend some sort of democratic process (public nominations followed by a poll usually works out well).
In addition to electing a representative, you should also name an alternate (a back-up) who will be asked to step in if the first choice needs to back out.
Your representative should be prepared for having to read upwards of 500-600 posts per 24 hours during the early stages of the game. Additionally, there’s a requirement that each player must make at least 10 posts per Game Day. Only active players should apply/participate. I repeat: Your chosen player needs to be able to promise a good amount of activity on a daily basis!

SEASON 8 FORMAT

The tournament structure

150 communities will participate, each sending one representative.
QUALIFIERS: 10 Qualifier Games will be played, consisting of 15 players each. I.e. every representative plays in one Qualifier Game. The players themselves vote post-game to determine who is deserving of advancement. 1st and 2nd place will advance to the Semifinal Games.
SEMIFINALS: A Jury consisting of finalists from Season 7 will select 25 additional players to advance to the three Semifinal Games. From each game, five players will advance to the Finale Game based on a post-game player vote, just like in the qualifying phase.
THE FINALE: The Finale Game is played. Once it has completed, the players vote to determine who shall receive the title of Season 8 Champion and a winner’s certificate signed by Dmitry Davidoff, the creator of mafia.

This year’s setup: Gold Rush 15er
2x Mafia Goons
1x Mafia Roleblocker

1x Town Motion Detector
1x 1-Shot Town Vigilante (n2+)
1x Town Doctor
9x Vanilla Townie

Flips are alignment only!!!

Relevant mechanics info

Day start.
Majority elimination is enabled Day 2+, but majority is not required at any point for the elimination.
Tied votes will result in a player being eliminated at random from among the tied players.
No outside communication. I.e. you may not contact the other players outside of the thread (unless you are Mafia and wish to speak with your teammates).
Phase Lengths and Deadlines will be up to the players themselves (I’ll organize your representative into a game with deadlines that suit their preferences).
Thread is locked during Night Phases.
Votes are automatically locked in at LYLO.
Mafia factional kills are assigned. They can be tracked, watched, roleblocked, etc. (In this setup, that means they display as an action to the Motion Detector action.)
Mafia share a factional Night Kill, which is a single standard shot for their faction. The mafia factional kill is mandatory.
Mafia may communicate at any time.
Each individual player may make a maximum of 150 posts per day phase (this restriction is lifted 2 hours before day end).
The game will have a host to oversee everything and make sure everyone’s following the code of conduct, but otherwise the game is completely automated (automatic votecounts, thread locks and reveals alignments automatically, the bot receives and processes actions, etc.).

SEASON 8 TIMELINE

There will be 10 Qualifier Games, and your representative plays in just one of these. They will have start dates ranging from mid-May to early July. So in other words, as long as your representative can play sometime during that period, they should be good and I’ll make sure they get scheduled into a game that suits their schedule well. I.e. if your rep is busy until June, that isn’t a problem.

The Semifinal Games will be played in July/August, and the Finale Game sometime in August/September (whenever we can work out something that suits everyone).

If you want to get in contact with me ASAP, you can find me on Discord (Lissa#8083).

Kind regards,
Lissa

The invitation is fairly long, so let me summarize it quickly. Do we want to send someone? I think we should. Last year, I made it to semifinals, so there's a legacy to carry on.
Games are active. Be ready to read hundreds of posts/day.
The setup is alignment only and town-sided.
We have roughly three weeks to pick our rep (and their backup).

Goaling it 2021

Every year starts with generous resolutions. Resolutions We usually fail to fulfill. Frankly, I failed both my resolutions for 2019 and 2020. But that can't stop me from wanting to accomplish things in 2021 and from setting my goals reasonably high again. Do you have your own goals for 2021? Share them here!

Last year, my own resolution were humble, but they mostly got sabotaged by the pandemic. I didn't manage to travel at all and I didn't manage to finish my thesis. I managed to change other things in my life, tho, and it was an overall positive year for me. I feel more adult, independent a confident in situations I would have been anxious before the crisis. I failed to stay financially independent too and I relied on support of my oldies for at least two months too.

This year, I have another set of reasonable goals and I hope to meet all of them. Most of them are way less demanding and they shouldn't be damned by circumstances. Here I go (important goals are bolded and secondary goals are in italics):

1. Finish my master degree
2. Hike the Blauer Kammweg
3. Take my mother and my sisters to Madrid
4. Organize and attend RMN Meetup in Rome
5. Become financially independent and stable

The first goal means to write my thesis. It has been surprisingly difficult for me to sit down and write consistently. I need to change that and soon, because the longer I keep delaying it the more I pay for school.
The second goal is very likely to happen in May. It's a roughly 250 km long trail near the city I moved to last year. I don't need any special equipment and I should be able to finish the walk under 1 week.
The trip to Madrid was my Christmas present to my mom and sisters and It's supposed to motivate me to earn more money than I need from my day to day slacking. It might happen in the last third of they year, but I wouldn't mind terribly delaying it.
RMN meetup is very important for me as a forumite. I would like to see some of you in person and turn internet friendships into real ones. I think Rome is an ideal place for it with cheap flights from all over Europe. If no one else joins, I can at least share few slices and beers with OldPat.
Becoming reliably financially independent is important for me, because it's not fun to be out of money. I don't care about money a whole lot, but it's nice to be able to pay your rent and have enough left to live in dignity. Becoming financially stable isn't that important as far as I can make it through the year in black numbers.

Brutal 7 Mafia (Canceled)

The Brutal Seven
The snow came out of nowhere. It was too early for the weather like this. A gang of eight pilgrims got cut off in a small cabin in the middle of nowhere. They got familiar with each other quickly and managed to turn the crisis into a fairly pleasant winter vacation.
That was before one of them was found cold dead few yards from the cabin. At first sight It looked as a bear attack. The man's arm was ripped off and his lungs exposed. Pilgrims shrugged it off as an accident and started digging a grave. The ground was frozen and it took three days to make even a shallow hole fitting a human body. They had a lot of time to inspect the body. One of them spotted something weird. There was a bullet sized hole in man's neck.

"This ain't no accident. There's a bloody killer among us."

They buried the body and returned to the cabin. There were no other people around. Billy was a spotter and he would have known. Most of the pilgrims had a violent past and frontier was a cruel place. They started paying more attention to each other. There was going to be blood.
