2019 gaming diary

Keeping track of my activity in 2018 was a positive experience. It made me think more about games I played and actively seek out games I could recommend to others. I could reflect on my gaming habits and I can swiftly recall memories of these games.
So, It's only logical that I will continue this year. If you're interested in previous year, it's in this thread:

My plans this year are more ambitious than playing games from a bucket list. I don't want to spend too much time playing games as I have some big plans this year and I would like to release multiple short games of my own. In the last year's thread, I made a post on what I expect from me in this year. Still, there are some games, which clearly belong on my bucket list. I won't change the list this time to make my focus on them more visible.

Best event and other 2018 shout-outs

Ok,
It's end of year and we're all busy nominating games for Misaos. There are things we can't include there. Games, which got a commercial release, personal news, community events or talented fellow devs. Let's share them here and celebrate the year this way!

Cap's Awesome Awards

Event of The Year
I would say Swap In The Middle With Two takes the crown here. The participation was good, people were really enthusiastic about their parts and not messing up someone else's work. I think the concept of randomly switching your half works great and makes for a better community, as we get to know better each other's approaches to gammak, and interesting games!
Runner-up would be Twisted Fairy Tales. That was an extra-ordinary strong theme for an event.

Commercial RM Game of The Year
This one is simple and I bet Jimmy and The Pulsating Mass would sweep Misaos if it were allowed in. The game has so much to offer from interesting mechanics and story to one of the best soundtracks of the year. I haven't played it yet but glowing reactions from the community made my opinion rock solid.

Rising stars of RMN
I would say Mirak and Momeka had a solid year full of interesting releases. Mirak's swapsies are two of the more interesting entries and he was active on the site majority of 2018. I hope to see a larger project from him in 2019.
Momeka managed to capture us with his graphics years ago. This year he convinced us about his qualities with several released titles. I'm only hyped to see more from him.

Personal Achievement
I was a lot more active this year. Not on this site, but overall. I think I can communicate myself better than ever. I managed to travel abroad three times. I managed to move on with many things, find a job, take school seriously. I just feel a lot better about this year than about previous ones.
Also, keeping a gaming diary helped me to track my activity and it made writing some round-ups on my occasional blog a breeze.

And a big shout-out to all the mods and especially Liberty for keeping this place alive!

Deving vs. Gaming

I guess all of us here are both gammakers and people, who spend their leisure time playing video games. How do you balance the two? Do you think it is possible to just dev without playing games? Would you be so interested or invested in video games without gammak?

For me, this is an important question. I like certain games (Civ, Crusader Kings 2), which can easily eat more time than gammak, while they contribute nothing new to my knowledge of game design. And there far two many games I would like to play than I possibly could. I think that focusing on innovative experiences and games, which I can benefit from, when designing a game might be the key here. Still, even this consumes the precious time.
On the other hand I think I couldn't play most games without being interested in making them. Suddenly, I would be happy with a far smaller selection of games. My focus would be elsewhere, it wouldn't be important for me to play artsy games for example. I guess I would stop playing games almost completely as other more prospective hobbies would take over my time.

There've never been any snaks in this valley and yet, a big sneaky bastard is blocking his path. He doesn't have a clue. Is it poisonous? He decides to be careful and softly pushes it with an end of his walking stick. The snake slowly turns his face. Two wells of darkness above sharp blades dripping with poison.
He knows, he gotta run.
The serpent slowly starts raising in front of him, keeping its eyes on his face. A cloak of darkness surrounds the traveller...

It's almost night, when Someone opens door at Happy Inn of the Peaceful Valley. It's the traveller. His rugged clothes are more rugged than they were several hours ago and he got two big holes in his chest, remnants of the serpent's fangs. He falls on the floor. And with a hissing voice, he whispers:

"The Big Snaak is coming and there's nothing you can do to stop it."

Right after He shares his message, He passes away.
Fortunately, there's a bard in the inn. And she's not afraid. She runs her fingers through strings of her fine instrument and the sweet sound immediately attracts attention.

"Every ballad has an end. We can wait for the end to come, or we can try to prevent it. The Serpent is too weak on its own and I'm sure it has followers among us. If we find them, I'll be able to sing a song about heroic guests from the Peaceful Valley."

This is an Mafia game with an open setup darivated from Cult C9. It puts a twist on a classic Mafia. There're no mafia kills, instead there's a cult leader and every night the leader recruits one villager in the cult. There will be other roles, but they depend on the number of players.

Basic info about mafia:
In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.
At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.
The game has two phases, the first of which is Day. During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it becomes Night.
During the Night, the thread is locked and no one can talk publicly. The Mafia, however, can speak to each other privately to plot strategy and decide who to murder before the next Day begins. In this way, they can silence members of the Town who are threats to them. At the end of the Night, the murder is carried out and another Day begins. In effect, the Town gets to kill someone, and then the Mafia gets to kill someone.
The game alternates between Day and Night until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else (or nothing can prevent the same).

Inquisitor: Can scan one player every night to find if they're cult or not cult.
Sleepwalker: Randomly changes position with another player at night.

2018 gaming diary

I decided to change the way I play games this year and keep it more focused. This is a list of games I've played so far in 2018 and games I want to play soon. They're often games I started playing two years ago and haven't finished yet. They're all kind of released games. New games might be added on the bucket list during 2018. I can remove some too.

Underrated Animals

More popular animals like cats, dogs and lobsters are getting attention these days. There are so many films and games about them. Other animals are not so lucky. If you were making a game with feral or tamed protagonist, which creature would you choose?

My first pick would be a tea drinking llama. It's a cool, classy and independent animal from an exotic piece of world. Llama has the right 'tude.



Llama's sidekick could be some non-mammal. But it's tricky. Piranha couldn't travel with it's companion properly. Fly is too small. Frog would be difficult to animate.
I would settle for a bird. Cock-of-the-rock aka tunki is a logical goofy partner for any Llama. Always reading fashion magazines and trying to steal attention with its perfect hair.

Welcome to Mafia fun #DUNNO: Befuddle Quest Mafia, a collaborative community game of schemes and investigating. Using a specific setup, ThingyAngel Nightless, participants will each get a role and I will take care of fair play. Why ThingyAngel Nightless? Because it only needs 9 players and it's fun twist on a traditional vanilla setup. That, And I'm running the show and that's what I use (because I'm old).

The gimmick of this game is that mafia (Barons) doesn't have a traditional night kill. Instead it has a day vigilante, who can kill one villager every day.
As a counter force, town disposes with Zack, who can confirm himself as town (host will post a confirmation) in exchange for an extra vote.
Days don't have a strict lenght. Instead they end once a player has a majority of votes. The player is killed and the game continues after their role is revelead (this can take some time, if I'm not around). Day actions can't take place less than one hour after the reveal.

Now Zack must escape the nefarious Barons' befuddling tower and make his way to his love and impressing the Barons with his mafia hunting skills!

The town of Redmont used to be a peaceful place. A fertile land of Felghana provided it with rich yields of crop and it's mines took care of its prosperity.
Recently, the land was ran over with various hostile entities, which have prevented further mining and endangered this year's harvest. Hard times for Redmont
Count McGuire, the local feudal lord, sits in his castle and collect taxes. Influenced by his advisors, he serves Galbalan, a local evil demon, which ultimately threteans to destroy the world. But he needs human sacrifices first.
The evil surrounding Redmont, have unified the townfolk as they need to rely on each other. However, there are servants of the demon among them. Every night one of them is taken captive and sacrificed to Galbalan.
All remaining townfolk has gathered at Margo's today. They reckon and drink ale with a simple goal. They all know that one of them should be hanged before the Sun sets.
Only by a proper discussion, they can hope to find the truth.
