A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

The game I'm working on now's going to be a pretty big one--probably not quite this size, but it'll be way, way more polished--I'll try to get a game page up for it before the end of the year. It's going to be a while before it's released, though, so I might end up doing a contest or two in the mean time, which means that the next game that actually gets released will probably be pretty short. Glad you're enjoying this one!

A Very Long Rope to the Top of the Sky

Whew, you've asked quite a bit! Hopefully I can answer everything:

-Babette, Esther, and Miranda will only join you after you have expanded your commercial district all the way.
-Griff is in the jail in Avishun castle; he stays at the pub in your town after you recruit him.
-Diedre and Gretchen are in the orphanage in Avishun. If you go right when you first enter the city, the orphanage is the bigger house towards the bottom of that screen. Gretchen's hiding behind some boxes there.
-The tree-bending stick can be found by checking the tree in your mom's old cell in Avishun dungeon.
-The blood orcs are in the eastern area of Snow Wolves' Pass. Basically, go north from the Bandit King's camp.
-The Nightmare Dimension can be pretty tough for some people, but the stronger you are, the easier it is. You should be able to finish the one you're on by this point, but if you get further in the game, you'll have access to more skills that'll make it easier (you'll be able to finish that guy off before he gets a chance to talk).

Hope that helps!

Controversial Topics In Your Game

I get your point. I'm in the camp that he's not an actual sociopath, but he's deeply ashamed of his past and what he's become. Sociopaths are good at manipulation, though, so maybe his depression is an act; it felt genuine to me, especially considering his day-to-day life. I think he's worthy of my pity, but it's not like I would want to help him in any way. If I were his neighbor, I'd ostracize him just like everyone else.

I feel sorry for him because he has some pretty severe mental problems, he's had to continually debase himself in television and film so that he can make enough money to keep his apartment, he's mostly socially isolated, and when he said something along the lines of, "If I lose my apartment, I'll probably commit suicide," he was absolutely sincere. I mean, obviously I think he did a fucking horrible thing and I feel worse for the victim, but even "monsters" are human, and I thought that documentary did a good job of making me see his perspective, and it's a pretty bleak one. He didn't look proud at all about his past; he looked nervous and ashamed but resigned.

Man, I watched that one a while back. I found it really sad and interesting. Like, I actually felt sorry for a guy who fucking ATE someone else. Sometimes Vice is pretty awesome--their original trip to North Korea is definitely worth a watch (their newer one is less so).

Yeah, those are the mobs; they have a 1/35 chance of dropping those, which may be more trouble than its worth depending on what you're looking to craft. I believe that one or both of those items can be obtained from chests, so you might want to make sure that you've consulted Griff.

Where is the "I hate all this kind of shit" option

I'd agree if Mr. Saturn weren't on there. Zoom.

"I'm a douche who created multiple alt accounts to hype my shitty games"

Yeah, the font changes were funny, especially since the writing style--you know, what actually differentiates personalities--was the same in every post. I would have at least liked to see one of the personas adopt a British accent or provide a short aside about how this was a fun game to play while "the kids were asleep."

Well, I didn't take scat off the table.

Controversial Topics In Your Game

As long as you're capturing something about life, there's nothing wrong about showing it on the screen, even bestiality--I mean, in some rural areas, donkey fucking is more or less socially acceptable, even if it's hush-hush. I mean, I don't really want to think about how this would translate to a game, but I could easily see a story about a man who fucks donkeys while dealing with abject poverty and loneliness, or someone in a rural area who is meek and submissive around domineering family/friends could gain a sense of power over an animal. It doesn't mean that what he's doing is right, and the audience will see this, but it could still be a compelling read/watch/play because the character connects with things we've all felt--isolation, loneliness, frustration, powerlessness--and we'd understand his actions even if we don't condone them.

I don't want anyone to make a game about fucking donkeys, let's just get that out of the way.

Anyway, this is just to say that controversial topics are fine as long as you handle them artfully. I imagine that showing sprite sex could even be done well, though, after playing Sore Losers, I can imagine how that would have come off as crass (if you're reading this, Sated, I thought your game was pretty awesome, though). I mean, you can always avoid nudity in film, but sometimes including nudity is just the right decision. I know that sprite sex would look silly most of the time, but with the right context and artist, I wouldn't take it off the table.
