I've been a fan and follower of RPG Maker games of all sorts since 2012. My all-time favourite has to be "Love and War: Act I", closely followed by "The Way" and "Romancing Walker". (Yes, I'm weird that way!)

I'm not particularly good at game design, though I can write plot-lines reasonably well. While waiting for the rest of Love and War to come out, I've also written three full-length stories set in the Love and War universe, which you can read over at the Love and War forums. (I go by Professor Q over there, surprise, surprise!)

I also enjoy reviewing games, though I tend to write about games I enjoyed playing. If a review of mine sounds critical, it's meant to spur the developer to do better.

I'm also experimenting with RPG Makers XP and VX, so watch this space.

Equipment Upgrades

I enjoyed this article, and found it instructive. My current game doesn't do much with equipment, but my next one will certainly benefit from your suggestions!

Love and War: Act I Review

I'm not an expert myself =), but I was under the impression that a "yandere" was more psychotic (or at least mentally unstable), while the "tsundere" was the one who alternated between being lovestruck and angry / resentful. (Of course, Lavie could still show her true colours in later episodes, so you could be right...)

Some of the backstory is explored in the beta version of Act II, so I don't think it's compulsory to read all the books - in a conversation I had with the author, he said as much. (However, I can understand how tabbing through RPG Maker text boxes can be a bit of a chore!)

Love and War: Act I Review

This is a well-written review by someone who obviously cares about game design a great deal.

As a counterpoint, I think Love and War stands - and falls - by its characters and the wealth of the background history that is built into the game. Admittedly, reading about it through book events may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it worked well for some players - self included.

Gameplay-wise, it may not set the Tiber on fire, but it works well enough within the framework of what it's meant to be, and the difficulty level is fair enough for the story to shine through. And to be fair, game mechanics and battles have been considerably upgraded in the current version, compared to the initial release.

As for the point about Ryan's love life and quests .vs. the political mayhem promised in the introduction, I think we need to give the creator time to develop this story. Think of "The Way: Episode 1" - it sounds like standard RPG stuff with a mysterious shadow thrown in, and then things get crazier and crazier (in a good way) until the breathtaking revelations of Episodes 5 and 6. Admiral Styles is an awoved fan of The Way, and I think he's working along the same lines.

One final point of terminology: surely Lavie would be a tsundere and not a yandere?

The Endless Road

Thanks! I'm trying to portray the level where the personal and political interact. Right
now, I've completed the first major set of quests and have reached a turning point. I'm not coming down in favour of any particular ideology - in fact, I leave it to the player to decide which "path" he or she wants to follow! =)

I should have something playable out by March, barring anything major.

Love and War: Act I

Nathan, the feather is obtained by doing a side-quest at Ozunhold Castle.

To do this: after defeating the Gorn Jabola, visit the Military Academy at Lorean. You'll meet a minister called Sir Cornelius Fairfax there, who will offer you a reward if you can clear out a ruined fortress called Ozhunhold. Accept, head to Ozunhold (it's north of Lorean on the World Map), and defeat the bird boss (the Crowled Eagle) there. Be warned, that is one angry bird. As a prize for defeating him, you get the Crowled Feather.

so did anyone find all the dog tags? I only have 1 and I've already defeated the queen worm or conquerer worm in the mines, and have a certain vegeta-like blue haired fellow in my party haha

It's been a long time since I played that particular part of LAW myself, but as far as I recall...

One of them is at Lake Derren, but you have to fight a creature to get it.
One more is hidden in Blackwater Park, during the Ryan/Lavie quest
One of them is found after defeating Easton Stokel at Straukpass
And one of them is in Mr. Ridane (the war veteran)'s house

(Note that these last two require you to take on the sidequests in the Explorer's Guild, otherwise you can't access those areas.)

I'm not sure where the other one is, but it was somewhere quite straightforward if I recall correctly.

Finding them all is rewarding, and strangely, is connected to the blue-haired Vegeta guy. Or at least, that's my theory. =)

Love and War: Act I

The Queen Worm is weak to lightning? Oh bother, I didn't know that. I just leveled Ryan up to 15, Juno to 12-13 or so, stocked up on healing items, and stood my ground. Talk about feeling stupid now. =)

As for Lavie and Act II - I do hope she gets to use that "Burning Arrow" at least once, even if she only has a small quest!

Hi there, I played this game like a year or so ago I believe and I really liked it, but I don't remember much of it. This re-vamp makes it seem almost like a new game. :-D Great stuff. Just a question about Armin's mechanics... is he supposed to have his thievery stuck at lvl 3 even though he's lvl 9 and I've seen him get "+2 to thievery" twice?

I think Armin's thievery skills do plateau at Level 3, yes.

And I wholeheartedly concur with all those who have declared their admiration of Lavie here! :-)

Since it's Christmas, here's my Christmas list for Act II (whenever it's released!)

1. More quests / play time as Lavie.
2. A Ryan / Armin quest to balance Ryan / Henrik from Act I.

Many thanks for your review. And congrats on making it to the site's front page.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Always welcome! (I must say it took me quite by surprise, but if it gets more people to give this game a try, I'm all for it!)

And Merry Christmas to you, too!

That's great! My next game will be an urban RPG dealing with mathematics but it's still on the early stages...

I must say I'm quite looking forward to that! :-)
