I've been a fan and follower of RPG Maker games of all sorts since 2012. My all-time favourite has to be "Love and War: Act I", closely followed by "The Way" and "Romancing Walker". (Yes, I'm weird that way!)

I'm not particularly good at game design, though I can write plot-lines reasonably well. While waiting for the rest of Love and War to come out, I've also written three full-length stories set in the Love and War universe, which you can read over at the Love and War forums. (I go by Professor Q over there, surprise, surprise!)

I also enjoy reviewing games, though I tend to write about games I enjoyed playing. If a review of mine sounds critical, it's meant to spur the developer to do better.

I'm also experimenting with RPG Makers XP and VX, so watch this space.

I always heard that joke as:

So this kid walks into a giant macaroon, and he orders a drink but the bartender says, "This isn't a macaroon--it's a beehive." And then the kid was viciously stung to death by bees, for the bartender was actually a swarm of bees pretending to be a human.
Poor kid. =(

Yeah, this is in an area tentatively called The Giant's Garden; it's the same location with all those big ass carrots in the other screenshot.

Fee, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of a...giant macaroon? ^_^

Keep up the great work!

Funny. When developers don't mention what kind of themes/subjects their game touches upon, or what kind of audiences are fit for it, they're accused of trying to hide crucial information (among other things). But when they do, they're accused of trying to avoid criticism. It's a "bad if you do, bad if you don't" kind of situation... Hopefully everyone can see how messed up that is?

I don't think anyone has any desire to silence criticism here.

Exactly. The author has accepted criticism like a truly good sport, and I don't think her game page is a place to continue this debate. I don't think she's asked for any white knights to enter the fray.... =)

Well, better late than never!

Also: interesting image. The file name suggests it's a garden. If so, those are some trippy flowers! =)

Apologies, accidental double post.

I don't know what to say, but the guys who made this game specifically said in the summery that if this game offends you then you shouldn't play it. I agree with you that an eight year old girl shouldn't be portrayed the way she was in this game. However it really ticks me off when people just give a game a low score because they are offended by it, especially if the put up a warning about what is in the game. Sorry if I am being rude, mean, or too harsh, but the way I see it, if it offends don't play it, and certainly do nit give a negative review just because it offended you.
I'm sorry, but this is bullcrap. "This is not a game for everyone" is the classic codeword for "I don't want serious, objective critique because my game is perfect, so nyeh!" The fact that is so commonplace with these "horror" games makes me sick, to be honest.

To her credit, it wasn't the author who made that objection. But your point is still valid: putting a content warning on material doesn't render it immune to criticism. There are good as well as terrible R-rated movies: the R rating (like the content warning) simply warns sensitive souls to stay away, but doesn't carry any implications regarding quality.

@Rose_Guardian: Fair enough. I'd contend that sexualized images of a small child go way beyond personal offence, but ultimately a review is just an opinion. My point in writing this wasn't "this game sucks because it offended me"; it was "these guys have talent and can do much better, and their storyline and gameplay are decent enough; but - and this is a big "but" - was an image of that sort really necessary?" And you really wouldn't want to see that picture without the text box.

@Kya90: Thank you for your gracious reply. You and your dev team obviously have talent, and can definitely produce something of value if you keep at it. You might want to check out the adventure game Dreaming Mary - which is available for free download on this very site - for an example of using a similar visual style to explore a similar theme, but in a more tasteful and thought-provoking manner. Please don't quit making games. ^_^

Thanks for the info! I should have remembered that: after all, didn't Courtney Love (yes, that Courtney Love) have a manga loosely based on her called Princess Ai? My memory, I tell ya. ^_^

=)

..."Are you stupid, kid? You're way below the legal age for drinking!"

And the kid says: "Considering you're bartending inside a giant macaroon, I wonder which of us is really more stupid."

And the bartender says: "D'oh!!"

(Now where's our laugh track?)

"Short steps, deep breaths - it's everything is all right..." - no, somehow, it doesn't have the same ring to it.

Also: RIP Scott Weiland. It's pretty darn sad that I had to learn about your sudden death just after discussing one of your songs in this review, but your music always remains with us. =(

Also: do the Japanese really use "Ai" as a first name, or is it just the usual fangirl-Japanese syndrome at work?

So this kid walks into a giant macaroon... =)

...dang it, how does the rest of that joke go?
