I've been a fan and follower of RPG Maker games of all sorts since 2012. My all-time favourite has to be "Love and War: Act I", closely followed by "The Way" and "Romancing Walker". (Yes, I'm weird that way!)

I'm not particularly good at game design, though I can write plot-lines reasonably well. While waiting for the rest of Love and War to come out, I've also written three full-length stories set in the Love and War universe, which you can read over at the Love and War forums. (I go by Professor Q over there, surprise, surprise!)

I also enjoy reviewing games, though I tend to write about games I enjoyed playing. If a review of mine sounds critical, it's meant to spur the developer to do better.

I'm also experimenting with RPG Makers XP and VX, so watch this space.

Love and War: Act I

I've reached the Alton Marsh and I'm taking quite a beating. I've equipped my three characters with the best armor and weapons that I could buy from the newly opened weapon shop in Davenport.

Many of the enemies also seem to be targeting Armin and ignoring Ryan and Henrik.

I can't recall the exact levels of each of them.

Do you have any suggestions?



This happened to me the first few times I played, too!

What worked for me was:

1. Use the first two quests to grind a little and level up, especially since Ryan gains stats, and Henrik and Armin gain skills, when they fight a set number of battles using a particular weapon. I had them at Level 5 by the time I took on the Baron Snake, Level 6-7 by the time I fought the giant slime in Trinden (killing all the slimes is a fairly harmless way to gain experience), and gave Ryan a couple more levels during his quest with Lavie. (Checking my old save file, Ryan was at level 9, and Henrik and Armin at 7, when I entered the marsh.)

2. Once you reach the marsh, look for hidden paths; you can pick up useful items there. (They will generally look a little different, and usually lead off the main path.)

3. If you're still having trouble, skip battles until you reach a save point. There are two of them in the first part of the Marsh, which will also refill HP and SP. (Note that skipping battles with lizards / mushrooms is easy, but running away from the insects is hard, so if you've got to run, choose the former.)

4. Once you're at a save point, use it to grind a little further. This is quite easy - just walk around at random near it, fight as many battles as you can, then return and refuel.

5. If you get into trouble at the beginning of the Marsh itself, leave the place, head back to town, and go to the statue of Nealus Hessen next to the School of Proper Thought (the place where you meet the Mayor). You'll get a "should I rest?" option. Rest there, and your HP and SP will be refilled. That way, even if you haven't levelled up earlier, you can use this opportunity.

6. Before proceeding to fight the two wolf mini-bosses, make sure the guys in your party are at least at level 10.

As for them targeting Armin, that's simply because of his lower stats and weaker armour. There's not much I could do about it, either, except making him defend until I'd levelled up a bit. However, once you get to level 8-9, things should be much easier.

Love and War: Act I

Excellent post, indeed! I'd just like to zero in on a couple of points that I thought were of interest...

First of all, my gosh the voice acting! I loved it! I'm seriously impressed by just the scale of it and how much there was considering this whole thing is still free. I admit, I was skeptical at first during the intro, but I think all the main characters did a good job. It made me wish there was even more during other scenes.


Fully agreed with you on this. In fact, Lavie in particular was extremely well done.

Second, was there a map of the world that I missed? Honestly, it was very difficult to follow and understand what was going on with the 5 different nations. Heck, one nation I thought was completely separate from the alliance until the ending council cut-scene when I realized it was one represented by somebody. I think being able to actually see the nations might help remember how things work.


I don't think there was one, though the Commonwealth meetings do give you a chance to meet all of them. The books in Sigmund Regale's library (at Lavie's home) do give you a ton of background information, though, and I found them very helpful in that regard.

Finally, I feel like it ended kind of abruptly. It's weird, I don't actually mind it just because of how darn good the game was. But looking on it objectively, I'm kind of curious that it didn't, mainly because there wasn't really a single plot-line that was closed. I appreciate sequel bait and giving world details, don't get me wrong, but when an entire Act felt like nothing was really wrapped up, it just...feels odd.


I'd think of it more as like the first Harry Potter book; it sets all the points and devices in place for the rest of the saga. You might want to check out the Act II demo (available on the good Admiral's page) to see where some of the threads end up going. (I have my own ideas about those, but I must resist the urge to paste a link to my own noodlings here! Must....resist....)

I don't remember the plot details anymore, but as a rather poor example, did leveling up Lavie actually do anything? I don't remember fighting with her afterwards, and I don't know if save files carry over to other Acts.


The concept art for Lavie in Act II (also on the Love and War website) suggests that she may play a more active role in days to come.

Overall this game was very impressive and enjoyable. Great job!


Can't disagree with you on that. I discovered LAW last year, and like a favourite child, it's still with me now.
