AVEE'S PROFILE

I started to design games at age 5, drawing maps and sprites with felt pens and paper. Then I began writing stories and game scenarios. I've been working with Rpg Maker 2000 and 2003 mostly, as soon as they came out.
I favor RPGs, Action RPGs and Fighting games. My favorite styles are Fantasy, Horror and anything dark or gothic. I also appreciate cute and funny content.

I make a lot of pixel art and some digital art (concept, promo, fanart, etc.)
I also compose 8-bit music.

Don't be shy and send me a message if you want to commission my work ;)

@Khos: Yeah that's what I thought also and now that somebody points it out, I guess I'll fix it.

EDIT: Done!

C20.png

Huh? I modified this image by adding a mini map in the black area but the old image still appears here. What's going on?

EDIT: There we are ^^

AnEverBurningFlame.png

Maybe adding some light effects on and around the fire would make it more apparent. Nice tileset.

The house's shadows in the back yard area are unrealistic. I think you can fix this by using Shift and copy-pasting the house's higher portion. 'might want to look for a tutorial about this to get a better explanation ;)

Backstage

I can't figure out the clock winding puzzle. I thought the numbers in the journal would give me some hints but aside from the date of 1931, I have no clue. Any hints please?

Project Viral 2: Outbreak

Here're my comments. Some of them might be the same as supremewarrior's.
I think several aspects need to be revised and I even got annoyed playing at some point. Still, I want to tell you what I thought so you can judge these aspects for yourself, and I believe this project has potential.

First of all some lag slows down the action. It's quite annoying for character movement and text. I don't know why there is lag because I had no other applications open at the time I played and my computer's performance is usually fine.
I think controls are awkward: only Esc opens the menu and Spacebar to search/confirm, which is not very practical.
The estate's layout is unrealistic: you can't have stairs at the opposite edges of the stories. You could fix that by putting 2 sets of stairs on each floor and have some of them collapse.
Since the gameplay puts a lot of emphasis on exploration, you need to play more with light effects (such as flickering outdoor light sources) and surrounding noises (cracking sounds, wind through windows).
How can the footsteps and growl of a zombie who's 10 meters away be louder than my own footsteps? Actually it would help the ambiance if the volume of noises was more realistic. Quiet noises are usually more stressful than loud ones.
I highly recommend adding an in-game explanation on the controls instead of having to search the online pages or figuring them out on our own. That first zombie beat me to near death before I found out you have to use the S key to attack, which doesn't do anything otherwise. Same goes for the hotkeys (why use 1 and 0 which are so far away from each other on the keyboard? Why not 1 and 2? ).
The dash lasts about 3 seconds, which I think is too short. At least 5 would be appreciated. I'm asking for realism here... I don't believe Luciano would hire gangsters who run out of breath after a few seconds. ^^
The HUD goes away each time I enter and exit the menu. It's annoying to press E everytime to bring it back.
We should get the chance to save the game at the entrance and at the top of the estate before entering the Don's room. The absence of save points doesn't make the game more challenging, only frustrating.
The leftmost part of the gauges are so dark they're black. It would look better if lightened and if all 3 gauges' lighting were similar.
Using "E" as an abbreviation for both Experience and Energy is confusing.
Aside from removing them when they block your path, is there a use to killing zombies? 'coz they don't give any experience points or items.
Glitch found: sometimes when holding X and an arrow key to run the command gets "stuck" and the character keeps running forward until the gauge depletes, even if I release the keys at some point.
I finally managed to exit the estate... It would be preferable if the zombies moved in random directions unless they come close to you. Sneaking should also help reduce enemies' detection ability. Otherwise, they all move towards you, swarm you, block your path and kill you. That is just plain frustrating.
And now I see this: Zombies respawn after 3 seconds at the exact location they first appeared on the map... That, I cannot accept. They quickly swarm you and it gets way too difficult to outrun them and impossible to defeat them all. I died, had the guts to start over again and died at the exact same place again. I got annoyed at that point and since I couldn't load any saved data to skip the estate, I didn't want to play further. I highly recommend that zombies respawn at the far edges of the maps to prevent players from getting swarmed. That would be much more realistic too.

Whew! Despite all that, auto dialogs during cutscenes and the ability to scroll text by holding the Spacebar are welcomed ideas. I also think the soundtrack is very good but sound effects are, again, too loud compared to music volume.

Do the drunk and hyperactive states change anything? I couldn't notice any difference.
And why is there so much food to recover Energy (Magic Points) if there aren't that many skills to use, and why can't we buy anything to recover HP?

Sorry for all the nitpicking but I believe making the appropriate changes would definitely help the game be more enjoyable. I'll follow your project for sure.

C14.PNG

I edited that chipset a year ago and I honestly don't remember why I chose to add the RTP tendrils... I want to use 2 or 3 different tendrils for the entire project though. Thank you for your comments. Demo coming soon.

Holding Shift on the keyboard while placing a tile applies it how it appears in the chipset, regardless of different surrounding tiles... For instance, let's say you place a 16x16 water square surrounded by grass. Normally there will be an edge of grass and earth around the water. But if you place the water tile holding Shift every pixel of the 16x16 square will be water.

Teamwork: Skillsets for your party of 4 (or more)!

Of course, there are forms of counter-synergy. For example, the Sleep condition is stopped when a unit takes damage but 1 hero has a skill which passively deals damage to all enemy units at the start of every turn, hence rendering your sleep spells useless. This is a problem. Avoid countersynergy, and account for situations.

I have to disagree with that particular example. If your Sleep spell caster acts before the enemies do, he can put them to sleep at the beginning of every turn while your other ally's passive attack skill deals them constant damage. Thus, enemies can never act and eventually all die. That can be a flawless strategy (assuming that Sleep works most of the time) and is a perfect example of synergy throughout the battle.

Otherwise I think the point of your article is to help makers create more intricate and interesting battle strategies and situations, and I welcome that.

Disconnect

The idea's cool. It reminds me of the Yureka manga.
