I use music from bands and artists in the free games I make: the frustrated filmmaker in me is very enamored of scoring scenes with rock'n'roll soundtracks Scorcese or Tarantino style. In addition to being a time honored tradition in cinema, this has a history in AAA videoogames as well (for a really great use of it, see Bioshock: Infinite). If I was a millionaire, I'd totally license these songs so I could actually use them legally.

I miss the highs and lows of game development

I look back wistfully at the time I got to spend on game design and development before responsibility seized my life. Now I don't seem to have the energy or time to devote to it like I once did, and I miss that sometimes.
Now I have a full time job, 2 kids, a business, a website (hi!), and volunteering at the community centre to do, plus floor hockey.
Last night I could have pulled out the laptop and do some work, but instead I sat down with a drink* (or 3) and watched Kung Fu Hustle and tidy the kitchen, and played some 'pokemon' cards with my 6yo**.
*the drink was Spiced Rum and Diet Coke, but I looked closer to the label, and it was actually 'rum-flavoured drink'. I checked the receipt and it came up as "PIRATE JUICE".***
**my kids don't play by the official rules - they just kind of wing it and use their imaginations. We eschew the energy cards. Basically, there is like an infinite energy cheat and the pokemon wallop each other with their most powerful moves each turn. At least it goes fast.
***that pirate juice was DAMN GOOD. maybe the best spiced rum I've had. Very smooth and flavourful.

Well, first off, Sailor Jerry and The Kraken are the best spiced rums (I don't know if they have them in the frozen northern wastes of CANADIA) but PIRATE JUICE does sound pretty cool.
Secondly, I have virtually unlimited time to fuck around on RPGs but I would trade that away in a second for a family of my own, for what it is worth. (The feeling of missing your wife/husband/S.O. and family is way worse than the feeling of missing gam mak. Jeez this post o' mine is way too serious for welp. Just pretend I added a doge meme at the end or something.)

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?
I'm taking a second shot at Final Fantasy VIII. My first shot was in 1999 and the complexity of the interlaced custom systems was just entirely beyond my comprehension as a 12 year old and I wound up trapped on the space station with badly under-leveled characters in an unwinnable state. Like 20 years of game design experience later, I hope I'll do a bit better.
(Trivia:I have never beaten a Final Fantasy game besides VII wait a second that is completely untrue I totally beat FF XV last year, and almost 20 years to the date after I last beat a Final Fantasy game, that being VII. I guess something about Final Fantasy: Entourage Edition was a wee bit forgettable. Anyway, I have a PS1 Memory Card save that has been stuck on the final boss of IX for like decades now, I managed to get to the point in VI where the world gets fucked but not much further, I ragequit FFX about a third of the way through because it was STUPID...and that's about it.
...I'm not counting FFT, either. Beat that.)

Incidentally I did wind up taking...whoever it was's...painful advice about the pixel clash and I remapped everything I'd mapped of the city of Johannesburg with a different tileset that is (please God don't let me be wrong about this) 1x1 like everything else in the game. So I'll be replacing those screenshots on the gampag eventually. Better 10 maps than 100 (altho honestly given a choice between redoing one hundred maps and literally any other relevant option, I'd go with the one that's not redoing one hundred maps up to and including just noping the eff out of the whole game lol).

Hello again, goodfellows. I'm having trouble with getting the transparent property value to stick to any of my selectors (or at least to do anything), even if I use the !important; thing.
Also, I was wondering, is there any way to make the background or any other selector/element translucent rather than transparent, i.e. directly set the opacity of the background color to something other than 255?
