NEW TO RPG. I'M PROBABLY AT THE WRONG FORUM...

Alright so I've noticed this site is mostly about "how to create your game", so I'm probably in the wrong website. If so please re-direct me.

Here's the thing, I just started, literally two days ago, playing RPG Maker games. It started with how Markiplier was about to play the game "The Witch's House", but I wanted to play it myself so I went through the progress of installing RMVX and RMVX Ace, also installed RPG MV, which was probably unnecessary.

Since then my curiosity for RPG games sky-rocked. It's very few, but I've played The Witch's House, Mogeko Castle and currently playing The Gray Garden. Usually I wouldn't play turn based games like The Gray Garden, but the story caught me.

So my question here is, if anyone would bother answering at all, which games should I start with?

Honestly I'm not fond of horrors, I'm easily scared and can be a coward at 3D games, but 2D is creepy too however I can tolerate it, ofc with sound.
I guess I would like to play games with, idk, puzzles like The Witch's House. Some adventure RPG's with a good story (at least decent) like The Gray Garden.

Sorry if it's a bit long, hope I receive at least one useful reply, in advance thanks :)

Moved to "Introductions" sub-forum.

That said, welcome to RMN, share your creativity with us!

*Edit: In answer to your question, You might give a look at games made my unity. They tend to be RGPs with a decent story. Puzzles, I'm not too keen on those, but, The Book of True Will might be something to look into.

Heya! Welcome to RMN!

Don't worry, you don't have to be a game developer yourself to be a member here. This site is just as much about playing games as it is about creating them. I'm sure you'll find more than enough content here that you'll enjoy.

For starters, I'd suggest taking a look at the list of Featured Games, which are generally considered some of the best the site has to offer. A lot of members also put together their own playlists with recommendations. So if you see someone whose taste you share, you can check their profile and see what they encourage others to play. And of course, there's always the search function in the full games list, if you're looking for specific genres or titles, for example.

Have fun, and don't be afraid to ask when you have a question!
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I second the recommendation to look through the list of featured games. There's been one game featured every month for the last several years. All of them are pretty good and some are really great. Two-thirds of the featured games are RPGs and one-third of them are other genres of games.
@NeverSilent & @LockeZ thank you very much.

Both of you suggested the list of featured games, I'll make sure to read through it. Sadly I don't think I will be a developer of games, I'm not looking for profit or anything like that. I do however like people who put a lot of effort into the games, like Fummy. He even made a novellette(?) which I of course have to read at some point xD
Welcome to RMN!

There are many games on here. I am sure you can find more of what you are looking for. Like Marrend said Uni makes some great games. Just look around you will find something fun an cool. :)
Wow,

I've only ever used MAL, but man there seems to be cool forums for everything out there, thanks everyone, you too, Marrend. Didn't notice you edited your post untill BlackWolf1992 commented on it.

All of the people I've listed have made games that are the exemplar of what a good indie game should be. As for puzzlers, I'm not big on them either, but check out games made by CashmereKat or Jeroen_Sol. They've both got some fantastic puzzlers.
Welcome, Nikechu!

Hey, don't worry if you aren't a developer! This place is also a haven for game players and those who do Let's Plays!

I think for a start, OneShot is definitely the perfect game to get into. It has an expanded version on Steam, but you might want to try out the free version and see for yourself if you like it. I personally like the expanded version, though!

Just a showcase of the trailer for the expanded version of OneShot:

There are also other RPGs that I like, but they probably are not the ones you're looking for since those are pure RPGs that are more into levelling/fighting bosses (pretty much the early Final Fantasy-style games) and are a bit more to the hardcore side.

Hello there~
Just look at me, I haven't developed or even dabbled in any RPGmaking and I am a big name here (if I may say so myself~)
And yes, there is no need to install the actual maker to play games. Instead, you can use the run-time-packages (RTP for short) for each maker, which is like a base-resource package. There are also sometimes multiple downloads on gamepages, with or without RTP (if you have one on your computer for that maker, you can just go ahead without one and save some significant download-size).

Those listed are already lovely. Do give the featured games a shot. There is a broad range of titles.

Let's go over some I played for a general heya-yeah

More puzzle-centric, very atmospheric and with very mild horror.
Hello? Hell..o?

You probably stumble across this, very puzzle-heavy creepy game. Beautiful
IB

This as well. A little puzzle, but 90% story.
No-one needs to die

A funny comedic point and click (a little bareboned end tho)
Craig

Story-focused minigame-chain. It good tho.
Panorama

Comedy, Stanley-style lil RPG
YEA RPG

Story-focused mild horror
5 Little Lights

Really sweet RPG, less puzzle.
Ink Traveller
The same creator also made a point and click adventure called Erayu.

Comedy RPG (non-standard battles, only one or two puzzles in total tho)
I will forever recommend it, I just love it, haha.
Hero Maker

If you want some pure puzzle with a little cheesyness, I can recommend this one.
It is a little clunky at times.
Mine Fu

As you may notice if you check reviews, I mostly pulled from the stuff I review, which are short quirky titles for the most part : )

Well, yeah. When you are a magical dragon it is kind of hard not to be big <3 :D
Hahahaha : D I love you <3
Yay! :D I love to feel loved it makes me feel...loved <3 I do find it amazing you have 10,000+ Makerscore and have never created a game. I was shocked when I first looked.
"I am sure this magical dragon must have some awesome 4.5/5 star games maybe I will get-- Wait...what? She has made no games! What the hell did she do to-- articles? Reviews? Really? Wow."

That is actually what happened.

I actually did see that OneShot game come up on my youtube playlist. Seems like a cool game.
: D haha, that is awesome to know.

And from my experience here, while not every player may be a dragon, they are usually treated as a mystical wonderful creature who will actually play some of those awesome games people made (people love it when you do! people also love feedback, good or bad, so if you can, tell them all about it~)
So I hope you will enjoy your stay and interact a little bit with everyone. Welp is open to suck anyone in.

Edit: Oh, also for the notification system, there is not one in place like this with @sthsth, it is often used to adress people in posts though (as you did).
You automatically get notifications for new posts in threads, statuses, reviews etc. you created by default.
You can also subscribe/unsubscribe to specific threads or gamepages to be kept up to date with notices to anything added to it. It doesn't count edits tho, thank god. That's how this site works.

And as a sidenote, most developers here aren't in it for the profit, either. It is mostly a hobbyist-community. So it's just normal game-loving peeps for the most part.

I think this was talked about at one point as something to look into that might be cool feature. However, it hasn't quite happened yet, and I'm not even sure if it's in the works either!

Y'all are making recommendations but not linking them, thus making it much more difficult to get to the games! For shame!

Also I am going to add my short games here because I want more people to play them:
Virtual Grappi, one of those weird foreign games that make no sense

Lobster Quest Deluxe, made in three hours for an event but I feel it at least has some entertainment value

Also also if you haven't already, check out OFF because it's cool.
I linked them : D
Thanks for adding links for the others~

Fair enough, Sooz. Let's provide a link to The Book of True Will while we're at it!
This might be in poor taste, but the game I made (Ara Fell) is currently on sale for 4.99 on steam with a 92% positive rating. I don't know if a commercial RPG Maker game is the best place to "start" per se, but I might argue Ara Fell is one the most well-rounded RPG Maker games out there.

There's a free demo, and you can also refund Steam games if you play them less than 2 hours. If you do decide to give it a try, please let me know what you think!
