AVEE'S PROFILE

I started to design games at age 5, drawing maps and sprites with felt pens and paper. Then I began writing stories and game scenarios. I've been working with Rpg Maker 2000 and 2003 mostly, as soon as they came out.
I favor RPGs, Action RPGs and Fighting games. My favorite styles are Fantasy, Horror and anything dark or gothic. I also appreciate cute and funny content.

I make a lot of pixel art and some digital art (concept, promo, fanart, etc.)
I also compose 8-bit music.

Don't be shy and send me a message if you want to commission my work ;)

Ultra Smug

There's an easier way to make it work.
I did it in some previous projects. You make a common event that constantly changes the hero graphics with “0.1 second” intervals and make an animation out of that. All it takes is an additional “charset” file to work. If you want to release a new version of the game, then I can explain it to you in more detail, it's surprisingly simple.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have to try it for other projects. I'm concerned that it might mess up other player animations or poses, unless I switch it on and off when needed, I suppose.

Ultra Smug

Thank you for the detailed feedback!

I wanted to add BGM but couldn't due to the size of my compositions being too large, probably because of the software I used.

The tentacles' movement is simply set to Random. And they grab you when triggered by Event Touch. I use a few switches to stop the other tentacles from moving when one grabbed you. Nothing complicated, really.

I don't like the empty space on the right side, there's plenty of room to show Score and other things... but I felt that it wasn't needed.

Adding sound effects would definitely improve the game. Not only when the tentacles are about to break free of the ice but also when they grab Mog, giving the player an extra cue to start mashing those arrow keys.

I agree about the continuous flapping animation. Unfortunately I wasn't able to achieve it. It could probably work if the player controlled an Event Sprite instead of the Player Sprite.

The first jingle is loosely inspired by the Ultros fight theme at the Opera :P
I wanted both jingles to sound familiar yet different from the original in case streamers would get blocked by those insane Youtube bots.

Kaizo is a term used in the ROM hacking scene, usually to refer to extreme difficulty.

Thank you! I'm glad that you think that I nailed the arcade look and feel. That was my main goal :)

Unchained

I finished the event version!
Since this is easily the largest game made for the event, I have a lot of feedback to give...

SPOILERS ahead:

I really liked everything about the game and had a good time. Since most dungeons are rather long, I usually completed one per session.

Mapping and level design are definitely among your best abilities, for towns and dungeons alike. 2k and Refmap tilesets also help in making better-looking maps than the newer RM engines.
The puzzles are as fun as the battles and they fit with the dungeons. Jumping and breaking pots and all that is fun too.
The level of quality here is what I'd expect of a commercial game.

Gameplay is not as strategy-heavy as Project 4 and Jamie, and I believe that makes Unchained more approachable to a wider player base.
Personally, I would have prefered for Lillia not to have those copies of other characters' abilities. More unique ones to make her stand-out more.
I would have given her more State inflicting abilities, a State healing spell, Buffs and/or Debuffs. But the new elemental slash skills sound like a nice and welcome addition.

Using the Casual Herbs and meeting most objectives, the game became progressively easier to the point that, after the Mine, I stopped using Herbs completely. Still, the rest of the game was too easy for my taste.
Maybe I optimized my attack power by giving almost all Strength Herbs to Seth and all Intelligence Herbs to Von?
HP, Def and Agi I distributed pretty much evenly.
The last Harpy fight was more challenging than the last boss because of the Enrager and I enjoyed it. I think that the last boss could hit harder and inflict States.

I enjoyed the story and the cast of characters. Having fiends turn into humans and thrown in their world is a nice, creative plot.
This might be nitpicking, but Mia's ending speech is a bit too expository and cerebral in my opinion. It isn't bad, but I think that you could have left a few things unsaid and let the party express their feelings more.

Overall, it's an impressive game made within the limitations of the event. It might be my favorite entry (I enjoyed pianotm's Magic Quest about as much)

Recently Watched Movies

What I watched in the last few weeks:

Mortal Kombat (2021)
Entertaining but far from great. The highlights for me were the prologue (I wished that the entire movie would focus on those two characters), Kano's trash talk and Liu Kang's character, interesting and well played by the actor.
Sub-Zero's ice powers are very well utilized and cool to watch.
The rest of the action is okay. The plot is rather bland. But overall I had a fun time watching.

Ride or Die (2021, with english subs)
I wanted to watch it to support an actress that I like, but I really enjoyed the movie. It's a harsh and sexy love story/thriller with several impressive long takes and a great performance by the two lead actresses.

The Invisible Man (2020)
I loved it. Part horror movie, part thriller. I recommend it.

Color Out of Space (2019)
I read Lovecraft's short story many years ago and was curious how it would be adapted. I really liked it. They picked a few ideas from other stories as well and made them fit in the story nicely. And Nicolas Cage is always fun to watch.

Unchained

The new changes sound good.
Still, I'll finish the event version (I just reached Ghent) and give you my thoughts on it soon.

1.44 Floppy Disc Event

author=Liberty
So I did make a playlist of games that have pages for this event: https://rpgmaker.net/users/Liberty/playlists/121171/

Lemme know if I'm missing anyone's games (just finished doing the queue, btw, so ones that were there that got accepted should be on the list).

Ultra Smug's gamepage
My entry's gamepage was made early. That's probably why you missed it :P

OATH

I really enjoyed the rebalanced version, this time with Ephna in my party. Well done!

1.44 Floppy Disc Event

@Mirak
The game is charming with funny dialogues! I enjoyed it, but like pianotm said, the platformer section is way harder than I expected. Had I known about the ceiling bump, I would have mapped the stage differently to avoid that. I think that the enemies' speed is a little too high as well.

@iddalai
I have mixed feelings about the game. I chose the "right" answers and played solo, which was extremely difficult. I had to grind to Level 15 before I could reach the first dungeon's final map, making slow progress, getting one treasure chest at a time before having to exit, heal and resupply. It took me about 3 hours just to complete the ice cave and I wanted to quit a few times.

There are several balance issues in solo mode: Dungeon enemies are super strong and the Exp and Gold they drop isn't worth it. Overworld enemies are easier and give much more.
The equipment for sale before completing the first dungeon aren't strong enough.
The Ice Gauntlet does not prevent me from being frozen.
The Hex skills are useless in solo mode.
Once CEV the tiger joined it made such a huge difference in the ice cave, but when I attempted the swamp cave I was getting my ass kicked way too often again...
Being able to recruit a wizard with fire spells early on would probably help a lot.

I really like the plot and the general concept, so I think that it's a shame that the game is difficult to the point of being frustrating. If you fixed those balance issues and finished the game, I would definitely want to keep playing.

EDIT: didn't see your comment above mine before I posted :P Take care of yourself!

1.44 Floppy Disc Event

@pianotm
The Dragon Quest 1-like feeling is definitely there but with more depth and more enjoyment. Good job on making all of the original assets and a lengthy game! I didn't have the courage to go through New Game + though.
There are a few bugs: The Wing sometimes warps me to weird places, including in the middle of impassable mountains. The Coffee I found in a pot was a Thermaturge Manual, the Fireball spell is always grayed out and can never be used. The teleport from the exit of the Minotaur Cave to inside of it is wrong if I remember correctly.

@Garage
Nicely done! To me, this feels like it could be an official Pac-Man game, since you put a lot of care into making many things and details similar to the original. The Scream face was a good choice and made me chuckle :)

@Fflo
It seems a little hard to register my mouse swipes on PC but aside from that I think that this gameplay system can be a good base to create a full-fledged game.

@WolfCoder
A cute demo that also has potential if you make a bigger game out of it. The enemies' movements reminded me of Lufia 2, so it might be a nice addition to get a preemptive turn on the enemy by running into their side or back.

@Frogge
A chill and lovely experience! Everything in the game seems to be designed around the idea of relaxation and positive thinking, such as the color choices and lullaby-like music. Only the second gear puzzle had me become a little more tense in order to think of how to solve it. Nice game!
