I have zero clue on what to do on Dementia Praecox
I remember that I used to always get Dementia Praecox and the game "Abstract Paroxysm" confused.
It's cool that even obscure RM games from the early to mid 2000s are still getting played. I bet the developers were not imaging that new players would still be checking them out in 2019.

Thanks everyone.
None taken! I do want to give them a bigger border - only problem is there's not room to increase the bordersize on the top and bottom without sacrificing the overall cutting in to the actual portrait, and I'm not sure if I want to do that yet.
Thanks for the tips! I've made these changes.

I'd give them a little extra border. Not much. 2-pixel width would be sufficient.
Either way, they look a hell of a lot better than your old fugly things. No offence, of course ^^;

Very nice!
One thing though: Kniryk's hair should be partially darkened by his hat's shadow especially near the ear. And the back hair should be darker too.
Thanks for the tips! I've made these changes.

I've spent all day looking at these, so I may be going a bit crazy. I can't tell if the muted color palette in the portaits work with the blue menu/message boxes or not. Interested to hear your thoughts! Should I change the palette?
Town Design! What's your personal approach to designing them?
author=LockeZ
So I've cooled off on traditional JRPG town design in favor of something more like how cities are handled in games likes Dragon Age: Origins or Legend of Mana. There's a map or list of locations, and you pick one and that sends your characters to the front door of the building. Or to the entrance of the market area. Or to the stairway in front of the palace gates.
The game Laxius Power 3 actual handled this really well. You start off in the biggest city in the world, which is basically just a world map in itself.
I try to make the cities in my game an easy-to-understand-and-remember "shape". Here's an example of this in action in a small town:

It's essentially just an F shape. This makes it hard to get lost. There are other cities in my game that are bigger, but are still simple "E" shapes and such. I also find that having buildings extend beyond the perimeter of the map makes it feel bigger. It implies that there's more to the town than the area your party is visiting. In my game, I usually try to imply that the party is only exploring the main "market" section of the city.
How to manage development?

Ah man, I am so guilty of this. I definitely think my game is better off for it, though.

Man... This thread is reminding me that I have so many games to catch up on!
Thinking about starting a playthrough series with commentary after I finish my game.

I just want to take a second to say THANK YOU DARKEN for creating your wonderful blog. RPG Maker Historia is a serious trip down memory lane. Back when I first discovered RPG Maker 2002, I downloaded and played EVERYTHING I could get my hands on. For a few years, I played more RPG Maker games than commercial games. I wish I had my hard drive from back then because it would be a treasure trove.
If there's one game I've always wanted to know more about the history of, it's Romancing Walker by Flare. I can find next to nothing about the development of this game on the internet. Where did Flare originally post it? Is Flare still around? I remember hearing that this game was a translation of a Japanese game - but I think this is just a rumor, because there's no evidence of a Japanese version, and all the switches and such are labeled in English. Anyone have any more background about RW?

Nice, but an in-game screencap would be even better. I want to see the whole shebang.
Expect one soon! Just want to get some gameplay bits finished before I do so.
Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!
I'd definitely choose the second one. It looks better, in my opinion, and I can't imagine having to limit myself to only two lines of text.
Older RPG Maker 2000/2003 games?

There was also another opening, which could have been a different game... this one impressed me because it appeared animated, but they actually used a number of images to pull off the animation. There was an anime girl. Also leaves falling. I think it played to a japanese song.
I'm not sure if this has been answered already, but perhaps Mazae 2nd Strike?
LittleVagrant, who made it, actually went on to be a professional game designer. He helped design graphics for DarkSiders 2.
