I like the RMXP RTP more than that of any of the makers that came after it. The screenshot looks amazing, by the way. Is that tileset edited or is it one of the default ones? It's been a while since I'm used RMXP.
My only suggestion is the window - as it is, it looks like it's just a big gaping hole in the wall. Is there a window tile you can use, or some sort of transparent "glass" tile? And if it's not supposed to be a window, perhaps there should be a railing of some sort in front of it.

Thank you so much for this timeline. This is something that I've always wondered about. I had no idea the translation began so soon after the release of RPG Tsukuru 2000. I'm also extremely curious to hear if there were any other English games in development before the translation.
It's amazing to hear that the production Forever Across Dreams began less than a month after RPG Tsukuru 2000's release! I'm going to check the creation dates of every old RPG Maker 2000 game I can think of.
I'm eager to see if any old-timers pop up to answer some of your open questions.

Thanks for the advice, Kaempfer! I'll see what I can do. As for encounter rate - my game doesn't have random encounters. You can see the enemies on the map!
The advice you gave me for the draw bridge is a great representation of a dilemma I often face when mapping. A drawbridge would certainly make much more sense, especially in real life. It wouldn't be a problem at all to change, either. But at the same time, I like the look of the large stone bridge. Finding a balance between realism and aesthetics is often tricky.
That's a great point about the rope, too. I'll move the bottom one a little bit.

@visitorsfromdreams - Quite splendid! It's amazing what you can do with just four colors. It looks like there's a tiny bit of anti-aliasing on the text - maybe get rid of that to retain the authentic gameboy feel.
@Momeka - I'm not sure how you accomplished that effect, but it looks really cool! It would look awesome on a title screen.
@theloathableone - Hopefully it's just me - I can't seem to get your images to load!
I'm about 98% finished with the exterior map of my game's penultimate dungeon. A major event of the game takes place here. I wanted to make this one ridiculously epic, and whats more epic than a large castle atop a snow-covered mountain? The design of this location is inspired by real-life locations, as well as maps in Demons Souls and Dark Souls. This dungeon is quite lengthy, probably the longest in the game. Hope you brought plenty of healing items!
I still need to add some finishing touches like more vines and such.

Back up once a week. Minimum.
Have a reliable flash drive or external hard drive dedicated to it.
Don't look at me like that, just do it.
Or both, plus Google Drive.

Back up your project.
Seriously, do it right now. I just now saved my entire project and lost almost nothing because I had a backup.

A lot of makers for years have been stumbling to put all three together, with varying degrees of success. So often you get games like Hero’s Realm, Phantom Legacy or The Way, traditional rpgs, made in rpgmaker that are well rounded but are often incredibly short experiences.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, but two of the games you mentioned here are actually quite long!
I do believe his mapping got better. I didn't realize he was still making games, to be honest. Got a link?
Holy Crap, why are some Games so HUGE??

There is a tutorial on how to turn off RTP requirement on this site somewhere.
However I have different problem. I don't know which sound files the default database uses, so I'm hesitant to trim the audio folder.

yeah, that's really tough to figure out, deleting even one song you weren't supposed to can crash the game, i guess you have to play the game through and make note of which songs you heard and delete what you didnt.
as for turning off RTP requirement, i dont know what you mean, the game downloads from most authors come with the RTP content included, i guess those of us who play and collect these games will have to simply play the games through and remove stuff that we didnt find, which is disheartening to think, cause that will be extremely difficult to pull off successfully.
There's a program called RM Tool that you can use to delete any files in your game folders that aren't actually being used.
http://www.blog.rpgmakertimes.info/archives/rm2k3-tools/rm-tool-rm2k3/
Using this, you can move all of the RTP files into your game's respective folders, run the tool, and be left with only the files your game requires.
