zz M!emories Review

Hey,thank you for taking the time to write this review, and to be honest that 2 means more than a 5 to me.

''You wake up trapped in a haunted house. You're a University student. Most of the doors are locked and the only way out is if four people do a ritual. So you search the house for a way out and three other people. This is a puzzle game done in the vein of Silent Hill, but with none of the atmosphere, characterizations, drama, mystery, or depth.''

Would you hate me if I said I didn't actually play silent hill?I mean,I watched pewdiepie's let's play but only about 5-6 parts,so Silent Hill is definetly not something that inspired me.

''The text and story read at a second grade level with grammar and spelling errors.''

I am not english so it is pretty normal for me to make so grammar or spelling mistakes, but I didn't think there were that much...

''The developer introduces a series of interesting plot points and then does absolutely nothing with them.''

Oh,I didn't want to ruin the suprise, but I'm actually working on a prequel where it all makes sense.

''We begin with Jennette and you wander around pretty aimlessly in the beginning, but once you find the dragon, you're pretty well on your way. The game becomes a string of finding one key after the next along with a handful of very simple puzzles along the way.''

Isn't that how most horror games work?Oh,and it's supposed to be Jennet not Jenette.

'' The developer makes a less than half-hearted effort to make the game creepy, but you get the impression that he just can't be bothered with it, because he does such a good job at so many points, but far too often, his efforts fall short.''

That's not true!I put a lot of effort into this game(I don't mean to be mean,no pun intended).

''Occasionally you encounter incredibly creepy and strange circumstances, such as bloody dolls hung by their necks, and brief apparitions expertly placed so that they seem to come out of the corner of your eye. These are very nicely executed. ''

Thanks :D

''In other instances, his efforts at freaking you out leave you scratching your head. For example, in the library, you find a book you need that describes the ritual to escape, but you can go around perusing other books. These are classic tales like Cinderella and Little Red Hood, but twisted versions. Unfortunately, you only get two lines out of each tale, which are extremely blood thirsty and the main character of your favorite story gets killed, or in Little Red Riding Hood's case, kills the wolf in a psychotic episode. There are so many ways these could have been done, but it comes off more like arguing 6-year-olds deciding that in their versions, they kill the princess and go do their own thing. In this assortment, we first hear the name John Greens. ''

So is this supposed to be a compliment? If so,thank you.

''Take a look at those dates. 1754-1998. You'd think that if a man lived for 252 years, that would factor into the story somehow. Nope. This game doesn't even give it a second thought. There's no musing about his secret to longevity. The only mysterious substance the game talks about is not elaborated upon at all. The only previous mention of John Greens is in the library, and after this obituary, he is not mentioned again. Presumably, the notes you find laying around the place are by him. Clearly, he has a phobia of dolls. ''

Oh yes,it does factor in the story, but that will be revealed in the prequel. He doesn't have a phobia of dolls,he is actually-oh,wait...I don't want to ruin the twist of the prequel.

''Next is character development. It's there for Helen, but that's about it. You meet Helen first and you learn she has a bit of selective amnesia. She doesn't remember how she got locked in the house. All she remembers is that someone told her about it and now she thinks she's cursed on account of that. Then you meet Alice and in the next scene, Helen remembers and blames Alice...and that's it. That's all you learn about Helen. For the rest of game, Helen is somebody who is just there, and so is Alice.''

Yeah maybe I could put a bit more effort in that...

''Of all of them, you learn the least about Victoria. These are paper dolls you will never learn anything about and you will never form a relationship with. They're just there. They are simply there to fulfill the four-person-for-a-ritual plot device. They have no other function in the story. Nobody disappears for you to go back and search. There's no sense of danger. ''

Well, actually Victoria plays a huge role in the story along with John but the secrets are not revealed yet.

''Altogether, there is no substance to the story, there's a mystery that the game makes an effort to tell us about and then completely drops, the writing is on an elementary level, and the spelling and grammar badly need proofreading. ''

Like I said earlier,I am not English so I may make some grammar mistakes.

''Maps and sprites are standard RTP. A few pictures appear with sound that are extremely creepy. The art style in these pictures is very disturbing and very well implemented pretty much throughout the game. For artwork, the developer does exceptionally well. Maps are fairly well done. There are a few issues. The developer doesn't seem to have a complete understanding of how some objects interact with the rest of the tiles.''

Well actually most of the sprites are non-RTP.I honestly didn't like the pictures myself, but I am not very good at photoshop.I am suprised you did.About the piano,I had to put it on the wall because it was blocking where the dargon was looking.

'' Problems like the piano in the wall appear periodically, and the developer doesn't appear to know about shift mapping, but other than that, his maps are very nicely done. ''

I do know about shift mapping, those carpets are like that on purpose. It's just the design.

''Yes, I know it's a laundry machine, and if I didn't know it before, I probably figured it out by the time I reached the 20th one.''

Well, you did not have to interact with them all.If anyone that did not play the game yet is reading this:ALL THE PRESENTS CAN BE FOUND ON THE GROUND.YOU DO NOT NEED TO INTERACT WITH SOMETHING TO GET IT.

'' This is a puzzle game. Mostly, the game itself is the puzzle, and there aren't really too many puzzles throughout. What's there isn't very challenging. The hard puzzles have the solution posted nearby, such as the killer floor tile puzzle, in which you'll find a plaque that describes the proper path. The puzzles that don't offer a solution are easy enough to figure out for yourself, such as the chessmen puzzle. The push puzzles fail to challenge and have no actual solution; you just push it all out of the way. The remainder of the puzzles are basically trial and error, insta-death puzzles. Save nearby, attempt the puzzle, die, load game, attempt it again. Nothing's broken in the game mechanics, a few of these puzzles are mildly interesting, but none of them actually stimulate the mind. There are a couple of points that you have to get away from an attacking doll, but this is easily done. ''

I am not very good at puzzles.I tried!*Cries*

''There's nothing that breaks the game, but one glitch definitely interferes, and here it is: ''

Can we just call it a censor bar? No?Ok,I'll explain the reason.
By the time I finished making the pictures,I didn't realize they were too small and too wide,so I had to use zoom.I didn't want to do it too,but I had no choice! Those pictures were really hard to make(This is the part where you are supposed to be like ''seriously?'')!

''Other than that, here's what else I found: ''

I didn't realize that...to late to fix it now anyway I guess...

''There are multiple endings. The first four are easy to get, are reasonably creepy, but you find that you just don't care what happens to these characters. You've learned none of the mysteries of the mansion. You don't know anything about John Greens. You just got out of there without anything remotely resembling a story ever happening. Nothing is ever explained, not even what happens to the characters.''

One word:Prequel.

I suck at interior maps(especially shops).
So,I think I am just gonna sit this one out.I may do the sewer one.
How do you plan on getting better if you don't even try? There's people here that are excellent at giving feedback and suggestions, I'd make a map and listen to the feedback you get. It'll help you in the long run.

Yeah,I know but I couldn't even give it a shape...
I may try again, but I doubt it will be good.
One thing I could try is making the table sideways. That may work actually.

One day I'll make a normal sized map.

I think it's ok.Small maps usally look better than the larger ones.
What's with the two boxes at the top right corner?

Item Shop
Is it ok to make something like an outdoors bazaar?Because I tried making an interior map and I must say,I suck at interior maps(especially shops).

***Edit***
Ok,you know I tried an exterior map too and here's what I learned today:
I can't make bazaars.

So,I think I am just gonna sit this one out.I may do the sewer one.

I'll have both <3

I've moved the shelves down a tile, used only the tops of the shelves and placed the painting in a less awkward spot.
I tried adding some table cloth on the tables to make it less plain as well. 8D

Oh yes,that definetly looks better!

Yes!It's my dreams coming true!I always wanted a location like this in a game!

Nice maps, guys.
I especially appreciate ESBY's Fallout thing as he has some neat custom tiles. These trees are excellent.
Nice parallaxes,Grim. And 1600x1600 i can't imagine such a big map. Isn't that bigger map than the Skyrim's one?

Here is my Wasteland, using Mac and Blue. I konw these cliff are floating on the surface. Still I want to know what do you think? Cuz my feelings about it are mixed. Is it too empty? Is it too green for a wasteland?

I'll be posting one more map made with Ace as soon as I finish it.

Yeah I like that, but the rocks seem to be floating on the lake.If they went inside the lake,it could've looked better.

I'm relatively new to mapping, but here's a saloon!

The room was too big to put the whole thing in game, so here's the map in edittor + the lighting which I added through edits.

I'll probably do the other topics later when I have the time, especially the clocktower one which requires pixelling.

I love that shading! Also,I do agree with Liberty and tbh I don't really like to see shelves or paintings on the lower tile of the wall but I do respect what you did since if you made it one tile higher you wouldn't be able to use the candleabra(Did I spell that right?I did hear the word a lot before but it is actually the first time I'm ever spelling it).Other than that,I love the light effects!I also like the tilesets you used.I also like the speech baloons(Muhahaha)but why is that old man suprised?Did the man poison him or something? xD

***Edit***
This just pumped into my mind. Why don't we have two themes each week?Or maybe open another thread called ''Maps Daily!''?I really like mapping and I like to do it even more when there is a theme.Man it's really annoying how you need to wait a full week...
Even though this is only my second week I already fell in love with this thread.

These are, again, only parts of actual maps. My exteriors usually don't go below 1600x1600 :v

Oh yes, that's a marsh.I love your parallax maps!
The desert,it looks good but I don't like the rocks very much. They don't blend in with the rest of the graphics.

Still not.It takes me here:

You could upload them as pictures I guess.I don't think there is a rule against big images.
